Full Chinnor Squad too strong for Henley

Richard Alliston30 Jan 2012 - 11:27

A full squad was available at Chinnor and the strength in depth was too much for Henley.

Chinnor coaches were delighted to have choices in both forwards and backs this week. With players in their natural positions, the forwards made an impressive start with some aggressive 'pick & go' rucks that drove Henley back from the start. The first points came after 10 minutes from the back of a ruck and was run in from 15 metres by a prop. The conversion followed and this set in chain a steady series of attacks that varied in style, as Chinnor switched the ball from Forwards to Backs. Chinnor crossed the line again after 15 mins, when the ball came out from the forwards, down the back line to be finished in the corner by the wing (12-0). Varying the play, a long kick from the fly half from his 10 metre line to their 22, was followed up by the inside centre who gathered the ball and crossed the line again (17-0) at 20 mins. Shortly therefater Chinnor lost George Blewitt (Inside centre) to injury, but the squad strength in depth was proven as Chinnor maintained their attacking play. Henley refused to lie down and kept trying to get some forward momentum but the Chiinor tackles were solid and the backs cover was good, snuffing out each Henley attempt. At 30 mins, another long kick put Henley back near their own 22 and the resultant line out was stolen, play moved inside to a ruck and quick ball put the wing over the line in the left corner. (22-0) Just before half time, a scrum 15 metres out, in front of the posts gave the backs clean ball again , to finish in the right corner this time (27-0). Throughout the first half, strong driving play by the forwards with both effective rucks and mauls gave the backs clean ball which they rarely wasted. Fresh legs for the second half reinforced the depth of the team and Chinnor were across the line after 38 minutes with a solo effort from the 22 metre line (32-0) Again, renewed efforts by Henley to press back were stopped at the breakdown and at 50 mins another scrum 15 metres out gave ball to the backs which was finished in the left corner, with the conversion taking it to 39-0. 9 mins later a further maul this time put the the full back in on the right wing for 46 -0. Henley contested to the last but the final word was with Chinnor, with the trey coming from the ruck again and once more being finished in the right corner to finish at 51-0. It was a strong all round performance from Chinnor, the Forwards were very effective, the backs hands were safe, the field kicking was well directed, tackling was secure, enough to make any coach smile !
