The conditions were "Wintery" at best, strong wind, driving rain and a pitch that quickly became a mud patch. Worthing were a strong team with only one defeat this season and many handsome wins, so a close contest was expected and that was exactly what we got !
From the Kick off the teams engaged in a close fought contest in the middle ground, with play ranging between the two 22 metre lines. In that first 15 minutes, Worthing, with the wind behind them, had the better of possession and territory but they were unable to create clear chances as Chinnor's tackling made it's mark. After a series of rucks and 20 minutes in, Chinnor infringed and Worthing were finally able to secure 3 points. With the conditions both windy and wet, handling was the biggest issue and of the two sides, Chinnor's handling was the better with repeated attempts by Worthing to get into the 22 failing though knockon's or turnovers at the Ruck. Although Worthing had the better of the territory, if not possseion, When Chinnor could get the ball, the Chinnor back's looked more dangerous than their opposition but again handling errors kept the score line to 3 - 0 at half time. With a deficit of only 3 points at half time despite a stong wind against them, Chinnor were satisfied and in the second half were more willing to kick for territory. Much of the second half was now spent in Worthing territory and at 55 minutes, after a number of driving phases, a blind side move from the 22 between fly half and inside centre gave Chinnor the breakthrough to score under the posts and add the conversion. Two tasks remained for the team, keep their hands flexible and score agin to close the game out. At 63 minutes, a penalty gave Chinnor a 3 - 10 lead. Depsite occasional efforts to break out of their own half, Worthing were mostly pinned back and Chinnor's tackling continued to be very effective. As the game drew to a close with Chinnor still pressing, Chinnor crossed the line in the corner to finish 3 - 15. An entertaining match to watch from two good sides but well deserved win for Chinnor
