Colts begin new season with comfortable home victory

CHINNOR Colts got their League Season under way with a convincing 24-5 win against a disrupted but spirited Rams on Sunday afternoon.

On a perfect late summer's afternoon, the home side put on an excellent display of running rugby to delight the large crowd, many of whom were suffering the after effects of the previous evening's entertainment at the Unmasked Ball. None more so than the usually cheerful and breezy lead coach who seemed to have been engulfed by a particularly sharp Scottish Dreich.

Chinnor started the match on the front foot and took an early lead when the influential Bailey accelerated into a gap and managed to release Tom Bridges on a super line, he crashed over under the posts. Bailey added the extras. Rams nearly struck back immediately but some really solid defence right across the team repelled multiple attacks with Will Leach putting in several big shots. Unfortunately, during this period, the team lost their inspirational captain Kyal and the rugged, physical Ted to injury. The rejigged team responded well to adversity with Cam and Kurt in the vanguard, carrying the hard yards and constant menaces at the breakdown.

A big bust out of our own territory by Joseph created some attacking momentum deep in Ram's half. From the ensuing scrum a lovely wrap around move from James released the outside backs and smooth handling and running lines saw Nathan dot down for the first of his brace. Bailey again converted, this time from the touchline. 14-0 at half time.

Chinnor had the benefit of a strong breeze in the 2nd half and Bailey made sure of the advantage with some superb kicking from hand. This territorial dominance led to the lead being stretched after some good interplay from the forwards, with Plummer making yardage, the backs attacked the blind side with numbers and Jimmy sent Ed racing through a hole to score, 19-0.

Rams again mounted some strong resistance and after a flurry of penalties open their account when their 9 scooted through a gap close to the ruck, 19-5. The home team were determined to finish on a high and mounted multiple attacks close to the Rams line. Opting for a scrum five metres out Will and Nathan combined for the dangerous and powerful winger to score his 2nd of the match when he burst through the tiring midfield defence, 24-5.

An encouraging performance but also with plenty to work on which the boys are determned to keep improving. A big thanks to Joe, Wilf, George, Lewis and Matty who helped out Rams, who had depleted numbers and without which we would not have played. We wish Ted and Kyal a speedy recovery.
