In a well contested match, Chinnor win five tries to three against Newbury Blues Colts

This game could have been played on the 1st team pitch, but should have been played at Twickenham!!! On a beautiful sunny afternoon, only 15 boys ran out to represent Chinnor, and wow, they did our club proud.

Straight from the kick off, Chinnor were up for it, chasing the kick off and forcing an instant knock on. Scrum Chinnor.

Quick ball from the scrum, and a planned move gave Newbury the run around, the move gave Adam M the ball, his break was quickly recycled to Dan M, and from the 9 position, took it upon himself to run through a gap, he broke through 2 tackles to dot down for the first try of the game. Conversion missed 5-0.

The long and high kick off from Newbury was perfect, they won the competition for the ball, quick ball was fed to their big number 4, who was instantly stopped in his tracks by Finn S, who forced the knock on. The resulting scrum gave Sam T time to kick safely to touch.

Line out Newbury and a good one at that, 5, 10, 15 yards of powerful running and Newbury were looking dangerous. Until they ran into a Chinnor double team tackle of Magnus P and Alfie C. Turnover, quick thinking by Finn S and Eddie C and the break was on. Phase after phase, quick ball after quick ball and Newbury were scrambling, penalty to Chinnor and Eddie C's brilliant kick to the corner gave Chinnor the perfect attacking platform.

A textbook throw and high take in the line out, and the Chinnor drive was on, Dan M with ball in hand at the back of the maul waited until the drive was stopped just short of the try line, quick ball from the Chinnor boys was fed through the hands to give Tom F the chance to make a barnstorming run for a try under posts, but the conversion was missed 10-0

Another nice kick and chase from Newbury, and they were battering the Chinnor line, attack against defence for the next few minutes, a powerful tackle from Eddie C gave Chinnor the chance to win the ball and kick to clear their lines. This was again returned with strong running from Newbury and Chinnor were again pinned back on their 5 yard line. Deja vu, Chinnor win the ball back and a great kick to clear their lines.

This time, a steal from the Newbury lineout gives Chinnor a chance to attack. Th e#9 and #10 combination sneak a quick 20 yards, backed up by Magnus P and Ollie J only to be stopped by a great, last ditch Newbury tackle, forcing a Chinnor knock on.

The Newbury scrum was strong, but the pass was poor and Chinnor had the ball back, Finn S picked it up and off he rumbled towards the Newbury line. A quick offload to Sam T and pass to captain George L and the red cap was in for another try. Conversion missed 15-0

3rd time in a row and Newbury won the kick off, some strong running and then a lovely cross field kick was caught by the winger, only to be forced out of play by a Will F tackle. This was deemed to be high by the referee, so penalty to Newbury. Some good power plays from the Newbury forwards finally resulted in their 8, diving over for a well worked try. Conversion missed. 15-5 going in to half time.

With Eddie C now off injured, the Chinnor boys were now down to 14 players and this is how it stayed for the remainder of the game.

Chinnor kick off and the chase is good, only to be penalised for a high tackle. This led to a rugby arm wrestle in midfield, some dynamic phases of play from both teams, finally seeing Newbury charge through to the Chinnor 5 metre line, only for the winger to be forced out of play. The Chinnor line out gives Harry J the time to kick clear, Newbury gather, but another high tackle gives away a penalty.

The precise kick to touch puts Chinnor's 14 players on the back foot again, but the line out throw was too long and Harry J made good ground, supported by Finn S and Joshua S. Chinnor's smooth passing and quick support play was only stopped by a Newbury man, playing the ball on the ground. Another wonderful kick to the corner set up a Chinnor line out. A perfect throw and take, a pass from mid-air and a Harry J sneak on the blindside resulted in the training ground try, a coaches dream, brilliant !!! Conversion made 22-5

Newbury threw caution to the wind, and started to get on top of a tiring Chinnor pack. A strong scrum and quick chip over the top had Chinnor chasing shadows until Alfie C put the breaks on the Newbury attack with a crunching tackle which led to a knock on, much to Chinnor's relief. The resulting scrum gave Dan M the chance to box kick away and the Chinnor chase forced the Newbury fullback to fumble. This led to another midfield battle with Newbury finally breaking through to score a well worked try. Conversion missed 22-10.

Now it was Newbury’s time to knock on from the kick off and Chinnor were on the 22 yard line in the middle of the pitch. A scrum half break was not complete when it was then unfortunately knocked on with only the try line in front of the team. Newbury didn’t hesitate and Barbarian style, they ran the ball out of their 22 and just kept going. Finally they were slowed down by some good tackling from Chinnor. Newbury recycled and a great line from their 15 smashed through the Chinnor defence and it was try time Newbury. Conversion missed 22-15.

Unfortunately Chinnor knocked on again from the kick off and from the scrum, instantly giving away a penalty. With only 4 minutes to go, to the home teams surprise, Newbury chose to kick for the 3 points, and to the relief of the home support the kick went agonisingly wide, Phew !!!

Game on, Chinnor kicked long and Will F chased the ball down well, pressurising the fullback into a fumble, Harry J was quick to support, passing the ball to Shaun B, Louis A and Dan M then on to “Sonny Bill” Joshua S, his backhanded offload (yes you read it right) opened up a gap and released Jude H to sprint 20 yards and diving over into the corner for a wonderful try to Chinnor. No conversion 27-15.

For the final few minutes, Finn S and his “you shall not pass” defence was immense, with good work from Adam M, Shaun B, Louis A, Magnus P and Joshua S.

There was no man of the match in this game, just a team, CHINNOR.

Well played lads
