A day after England had seen off New Zealand, it was the turn of the Chinnor Colts to show their skills. Unfortunately, it was never to be and, despite some good play, our players were out muscled and out played, particularly in the forwards.
Chinnor started with a perfect storm of six front row players away or injured, so had to go uncontested from the off. So short of forwards were they that two centres were brought in to play #6 and #7. This, coupled with the fact that Buckingham have a large and strong pack, put the hosts on the back foot from the off. The visitors either couldn't or wouldn't spin the ball out to their backs so the supporters set in for an attritional match. To their credit, the Chinnor Colts repeatedly worked hard making dozens of tackles before letting one slip.
When Chinnor secured possession, they wisely tried to get the ball out for the plentiful backs to push into the Buckingham defence. At times this worked, but equally there were some over-runs and some dropped passes which cost the hosts the opportunity of points. The attacking shape was good and there were promising runs from all of the players.
That said, the result was never in doubt and credit goes to Buckingham who agreed to travelled to Chinnor after the original fixture with Tring fell through. Our thanks to all those who played out of position and made themselves available for the first of two half-term dates. Onwards and upwards Chinnor Colts!
