Chinnor Colts entertained a large crowd with a thrilling victory over a skillful and determined Olney team.
Playing with the stiff wind at their backs in the 1st half, Chinnor dominated possession but played too much rugby in their own half with a try by George Hanley being their only reward. Shortly before the break Onley breached Chinnor’s normally resolute defence and with the conversion made the lads turned round 5-7 down.
After some robust half time discussions the lads played the 2nd half into the wind with much more drive and purpose. Chinnor’s accuracy in the lineout and driving maul was a major part of their play to combat Olney's enterprising back line and fleet footed No.14.
At the start of the 2nd half Olney made better use of the conditions to land a penalty from half way and extend their lead to 10-5.
From a Chinnor penalty which was kicked into the opposition 22, Chinnor forwards again won the lineout and drove over the line where Sam Nicholls scored and successfully made the difficult conversion to edge Chinnor back in front 12-10, game on!
With penalty count against Chinnor rising the visitors slotted a simple 3 points to retake the lead 12-13.
Another period of sustained Chinnor pressure followed which resulted in a try for Jacob Whitfield and Nicholls again converted to swing the game back in Chinnor’s favour 19-13.
The visitors then threw everything they had left at the Chinnor line and with only 4 minutes remaining broke through to score near the posts. The straightforward conversion gave Olney a 20-19 lead as the clock ticked down.
From the restart, Chinnor fought to regain possession and following a period of driving phase play by the forwards, the referee awarded Chinnor a penalty out wide in the Olney 22. Time was almost up and with such a strong wind the coaches “advised” the lads to go for the corner. The captain decided otherwise and Sam Nicholls held his nerve to kick the winning penalty and the Chinnor lads came out on top with a 22-20 win.
Credit must go to the whole squad of 33 lads who have trained with such purpose since the summer.
Commiserations to Olney who gave us a great game. We are now in the semi-finals, playing on Sunday April 2nd.
