Chinnor leave Grove groveling

Chinnor leave Grove groveling

Dave Winpenny16 Mar 2010 - 07:39

Grove 5 - Chinnor 39

It had been 5 weeks since the Colts side had seen action and with injuries to key players after playing for the seniors, the Colts took to the field with an unfamiliar back line and with two of the Under 17 squad taking up positions (Mitch at Hooker and Finn at Scrum Half) this fixture wasn’t going to be as easy as some may have predicted, in the first 20 minutes this proved to be the case.

Chinnor kicked off into a stiff breeze and Grove immediately took the game to Chinnor, with driving rucks and breaking the Chinnor line, Grove were only thwarted by some unlucky handling otherwise it would have been try time. The Chinnor’s defence were lacking their usual aggressiveness and cohesion and the first 20 minutes saw Chinnor penned back in their own half. However cometh the hour cometh the man, Tom Webb (captain) took the onus and made some aggressive breaks from breakdowns and the back of the scrums and then made a break which was to prove to be the turning point, a 40 metre run to cross the line.

Chinnor then picked up their usual slick passing and off-loading with aggression at the breakdown gaining ground and Grove simply couldn’t stop Webby once again crossing the line. Chinnor then preesed home their advantage with Joe Rackstraw scoring twice to bring the score to 20 - 0 at half time. (Jack Green may kick for the Two’s, but his kicking boots were elsewhere today).

The second half started much as the second half had finished, a try by Joe Rackstraw to complete his hat-trick, a kick through from full back Tom Floyd and a wicked bounce which unfortunately for the Grove full back led to Joe taking the try which was converted. A lapse in the Chinnor concentration from a quick penalty by Grove led to a series of breakdowns before Grove crossed the line for a well deserved try.

After this Chinnor knew the game wasn’t over yet as Grove shored up their defence with their replacements, however Chinnor were not finished yet, a kick through from winger Seb Johnson led to Andy crossing the line for another Chinnor try. Finally from the kick off, the best move of the game Seb Johnson catching the ball in between his 22 and the 10 metre line took off on a superb run which took him to the Grove 22 with an off-load round the tackle to the centre and Tom Floyd cutting a fantastic line led to the final try of the game which was converted.

This was by no means a vintage performance by this talented bunch of players, but with an unfamiliar back line it was more than satisfactory. Special mention goes to Finn who stepped into the Colts for the first time and never put a foot wrong and Mitch who was aggressive and determined as usual. The man of the match however goes to Joe Rackstraw, three tries and as we have come to expect from Joe a fantastic game at the breakdown everything you expect from an openside flanker.

This result means that Chinnor Colts have won the OOB division two title with a game to spare, scoring maximum points in every match.

Tries (7) Rackstraw 3, Webb 2, Berry 1, Floyd 1. Conversions (2) Webb 1, Berry 1
