Chinnor U16s fall short against Oxford Harlequins

Alex Bond19 Nov 2018 - 09:00

Despite playing well, Chinnor are not a match for a strong Quins team

In breezy and sunny conditions, Chinnor arrived at the all weather synthetic turf pitch in Horspath, the new home of Oxford Harlequins U16s. The match was always going to be a top-of-the table tussle with Quins having won two of the last three encounters. The task for the visitors was made no easier by Quin's recruitment drive which had bolstered their ranks with additional quality players for the 2018/19 season.

The match started at quite a pace and, with only periodic moments of respite for both teams, it continued like this until the final whistle. Quins opened the scoring after nine minutes, then touched down again at fifteen minutes and again ten minutes later. Chinnor responded with one converted try five minutes before the half time. The half was characterised by dominant play by Quins with good defence by both teams. Visitors and hosts alike were penalised for playing off their feet as well as being offside. Both teams squandered one or two chances, though generally it was the pressure of good defence that forced errors. 17-7 at the break.

Chinnor started the second half well, wisely opting to kick an early penalty, followed shortly afterwards by scoring a converted try from a well-worked passage of play. With the score level, it looked like the visitors were in the ascendency, but Quins countered with two team tries and one from a superb individual run. Chinnor did not give up, despite starting to tire and secured a consolation try two minutes from time. Quins jackalled well and also used their forwards to good effect to gain ground. Their line speed in defence was good restricting the visitors from getting the ball to their pacy wingers. The Chinnor team carried and defended well, though the line out was not effective due, in part, to a very effective opposition jumper at 2. The team worked well for each other and were simply beaten by a stronger team. Final score 34-22.
