With a number of players away, Chinnor U13s still put out two strong squads to play Drifters Rugby Club, in a round robin.

A very different looking U13’s squad arrived early on a bright and warm Sunday morning at Kingsey Road. Dressed in their number 1s it was hard to recognise some of our boys.

With a number of boys away we still maintained two strong squads to play Drifters Rugby Club, based over in Farnham Common in Bucks, in a round robin.

The Chinnor Blue team emerged from a Rugby World Cup haze and started the first game positively camping in the Drifters half for the first five minutes. This pressure was released when the opposition scored a fantastic individual try from deep in their own twenty-two. Chinnor went back on the offensive, the forwards working hard against a physically big side, the scrum staying solid and a very competitive lineout. This eventually led to a sustain barrage of attempts to cross the oppositions line. The Drifters defence was up to the task until Gus managed to wriggle his way through a series of tackles to cross the line and square up the game.

The step up to the juniors has presented several challenges to the Chinnor boys, the biggest being the size of the pitches. So it was a well-deserved drink and rest for the boys in black and white. The second half was all about turning the majority or territory and possession into points.

The second half was a more even affair with a few more handling errors creeping in as both sets of boys tired. The backs defensive line worked well to close down the attacking threat of the Drifters centres and credit to the Drifters forwards for fighting hard against a Chinnor pack that hard the bit between their teeth and wanted the next try. This determination was needed most with Drifters looking to score in the corner but Daniel playing at scrum-half threw himself under the Drifters player and ball as they were going over the line. Held up, scrum five, grateful team-mates and two very proud parents.

The second half finished score-less and the final whistle blew with the score at 5-5. A draw was probably a fair result and well-played to both sides.

Next up were the Chinnor Reds – who were committed from the start and playing some good rugby. It was an enjoyable test for a number of the newer players, who were spread from front row to wing and back.

The front row combination of Bailey, Harry and Ollie was sound and helped secure the scrum as well as hold up a bigger pack in open play. That said, Drifters managed to win a couple against the head and decided to spin it wide to their quick runners. This tactic only worked once and was then thwarted by Will showing not just speed but great tackle commitment to close his wing down and then again by Billy on the other side.

This saw a change in direction from Drifters to their large, quick, route-one, crash-ball centre and although our defence was able, eventually we conceded two tries. Toby put in some great effort to keep it in check.

At times in attack the ball did not make it all the way to the wing, as much a credit to Drifters defence which was resolute. Undeterred, the lads regrouped and scored a solid try to ensure the score line of 5 -12 reflected their hard work. A special mention to Max who played for both teams.

The game was played with great spirit by both sides and it was a pleasure to play Drifters, who we will look forward to meeting next season. Photo courtesy of Jeremy Williams (from Drifters).

The morning was capped off by a ten minute Chinnor v Chinnor warm down followed by a curry lunch in the clubhouse. A big thank you to the coaching team and supportive parents - what a great day of rugby.
