A turnaround in fortunes after nine weeks of hard work.

Blue Team vs Buckingham Sunday 10 January 2016
On another unusually sunny Sunday and our first run out of 2016, Chinnor lined up to see if we could even out the deserved but nonetheless unhappy defeat Buckingham inflicted on us on Sunday 1st November – a day we learned that no sleep does not an effective Chinnor squad make.

After a quick training session, with the backs working on their structure and a few moves, the forwards reminding themselves what a lineout was and reacquainting themselves with one another in the scrum, the Blue team took to the pitch first. The sun was strong and low, sitting over the club house and the wind (unusually) was blowing up the pitch, also from the clubhouse end.

Vaughan kicked into the sun and we immediately went into a physical game where our rucking and mauling was going to be put under pressure. Chinnor soon gained possession from a rolling maul and No.8 Mulholland peeled off blind and with two fine hand-offs put the ball down for the first try. No conversion.

However, a big powerful Buckingham side were no pushover and turned us over in successive rucks. The ball eventually went out of touch and next came a really super team moment. Chinnor won the lineout from another fine throw-in from Bedwell and the ball went spinning all the way down the line to allow Bettison a sprint from the 22, over the Buckingham line to score our second try. Vaughan converted well from the angle.

Immediately after the restart the Buckingham centre found a gap in the oncoming Chinnor defence and sprinted through several attempted tackles and scored an superb 60 metre try. Chinnor a little stunned, regrouped behind the posts.
The back-row started to combine well and Mulholland made a great offload to Hayden whose pace and determination proved too much for the chasing Buckingham defenders who popped it down under the posts, and another conversion pushed the score to 19 -5.
The restart saw some good possession by Buckingham but after another penalty conceded by a somewhat eager Buckingham No 8, the ball shifted to Butler on the left wing who made a fantastic run before being dragged down on the opponents 22 metre line.

Buckingham played their way back into the game and with time running out before half time we were out-rucked and Buckingham drove over to score. The try was converted to leave a half time score of 19-12 to the home side.

The player’s half time team talk and old school oranges produced an energised and focused Chinnor side and with the wind and sun behind them put Buckingham under real pressure with everyone playing their part in a strong team performance.

Your correspondent was somewhat distracted by an injury and a challenging pen, however, Vaughan and Butler combined well to score. The final try was one of the finest we have seen from our U13’s group. Starting in our 22, nearly a dozen short passes, unselfish running and support by all led to a wonderfully timed step and offload by Gilbert, ending with a 40 metre sprint in for the final try by a very hard working Taylor.

The final score 43-12. A really strong game with our overall commitment at the breakdown definitely on the rise. The highlight though was the team work ethic and encouragement displayed by all.

Many thanks to all, especially to all the parents who turned up to show great support for the match.
