Our two non-streamed teams headed to Banbury for the U13 Oxfordshire festival.

Despite the previous evenings shenanigans the sun was shining over at Banbury. This was the perfect opportunity to play several short matches early in the season, bed in some new players and try some different combinations. Both squads, Red and Blue, were looking forward to the challenge and fortunately, for once, were drawn in separate groups.

Chinnor Red faced some tough opposition in the their Group – with Oxford Quins, Henley and Bicester. Unfortunately Oxford RFC failed to arrive.

With some players for whom this is their first full season, balance in selection can be difficult but the team battled hard and tackled well. In the opening match, against a very well drilled Oxford Quins team, saw their forwards lead them to a slim victory despite the best efforts of Archie, Max, Bailey and Harry.

Next came Bicester, and this time it was our forwards who won the battle with Charlie making some brilliant carries, Otto thriving at blindside and Ned at No. 8 showing his skills out wide for a storming try.

The final match against old adversaries Henley was a great one played in the right spirit, but sadly a stretch too far for some, with a couple of the more experienced boys sitting out injured. Well done to new lads, Louis and Will for stepping up and getting stuck in. Henley stuck to doing the basics very well; accurate passing, running straight, quick ruck ball, and this was enough for another narrow loss for the team but with some good lessons learnt for us all and a great spirit all round. The mighty Chin will return. Well done boys.

Chinnor Blue had an excellent day, at times playing the best team rugby displayed in the last couple of seasons.

Their defensive play was well organised and the tackling across the board was a step up from previous outings. The stand out feature of their matches, however, was the excellent support play in attack. The boys worked hard to ensure there was always a support runner on the shoulder of the ball carrier and the boys were at their best when they played it simple, drawing defenders and passing to fellow players in space.

Dylan at fly half organised his backs well and with a strong defensive line he, and his centres Alex and Oscar, caused major problems for their opposite numbers. The inside backs also combined well and broke the line on several occasions. The back three ran with purpose with Josh, Max, Harry and Martin all backing themselves with good hard running whenever they got the ball. Daniel was excellent at scrum half, improving distribution and communication between him and his fly-half.

The tight forwards Adam, Shaun, Sam, Leo, Gus and Joe were immense in both the scrum and line-out and, although, often much lighter than their opposition forwards, they won all their set pieces and also won a number of opposition balls. The loose forward trio Ben, Rosco and Finn combined very well together on attack and were quick to any breakdown. As a unit the forwards looked good when driving and won most of the second phase ball.

The solid team work ultimately paid dividends with the boys winning all but one game and only then by a missed conversion. They only conceded one try all day, but they crossed the opposition line nine times.

Their scores across both squads were:

Chinnor Blue 10 - Gosford All Blacks 0
Chinnor Blue 20 - Wallingford 0
Banbury 7 – Chinnor Blue 5
Chinnor Blue 10 - Witney 0
Chinnor Red 5 – Oxford Harlequins 12
Chinnor Red 15 – Bicester 5
Chinnor Red 5 – Henley 15

Next week we host Drifters and Gosford All Blacks at the club. If you’ve not already please update your availability and we’ll see you at training on Wednesday evening. http://www.chinnor-rfc.com/teams/1878/fixtures-results
