Despite the atrocious weather a good day’s rugby was had at Wallingford. After 12 sessions training, the opportunity was given to all players to take part in 15 a-side rugby.
We were drawn in pool C with Bicester and Oxford Harlequins.
The first 15 played against Bicester, Chinnor started slowly and struggled to get on the pace of the game. There were occasional glimpses of skill showing what the players are capable of. Being 14 nil down at half time and chasing the game allowed Bicester to complete a 28 - 0 victory.
The second 15 players played against Quins, having watched the previous 15's slow start, they attacked from the beginning. Quins had just completed a 14 nil beating of Bicester and were a good side. Despite a valiant effort Chinnor lost 5 nil.
In the Bowl final we played Oxford, sticking with our two mixed teams, the first 15 took their chance to start strongly. A good run from Harry King who laid off a pass for Mathew Cammack to run onto and score, took us into a 5 nil lead, Ed Yeats converted to put us 7 nil ahead.
The second 15 came on and defended into a strong wind. We did have opportunities to increase the lead, one notable effort from Guy North. In the end our defence held strong and we came out 7- nil winners.
With some good performances from our old and new players, competition for cup places will be strong.
Overall, a good introduction to 15 a-side rugby and a chance to see what we will be up against in future matches.
