Chinnor IV’s hosted Amersham & Chiltern III’s this week, who currently top the table
in the league.
Although this could have been a one sided affair, a spirited performance by the home side
was not reflected in the final score line. On hand as ever, front row specialist John “Tin”
Cann described conditions from the touchline as “fair but cold”.
Despite missing Mike “Sippy” Hughes in the front row, Chinnor were able to field Tom
“Hartley” Warner who filled his team mates boots admirably. The youngster’s performance
will be pushing local legend Rob “Awight moi son” Hill for his position soon.
Along side “Hartley” was mike “Thunderclap” Neuman propping, with the new Mike
“Potter” Bambrook pushing him all the way, in the form of Nathan “Webb” Ellis.
Chinnor were able to make the scrums their own with this light and mobile pack.
Good ball from the pack was deftly directed by Shane Big Cook, Little Cook” Ellis, soon
saw the home side pressure Amersham. The result was 2 penalties in quick succession.
These were stroked nicely by Elliot “Heaven” Bevan to get Chinnor on the score sheet.
Aggressive defence then saw the visiting fullback forced into error. A dropped ball was
picked up one handed by Gavin “Gavla” Williams, who embarked on an arcing run to
finish under the posts. “Heaven” added the extras.
With score sheet building, Chinnor found the accelerator. Acting as scrum half, the ever
present “Thundercalp” Neuman set the game alight and popped a neat pass to “Gavla” from
a series of Chinnor breakdowns. With the try line beckoning and one player to beat,
“Gavla” chipped ahead only to see a freak gust of wind push the ball into touch.
The pack were firing on all cylinders now, and again found themselves on the Amersham
5m line. Recycling the ball found the second row dynamo “Shoes” Halson in possession,
who used his agility to weave a path to the line. Although seemingly held up, the replay
saw the try awarded.
Both sides were tiring, and sensing this, “Big Cook Little Cook” Ellis played a scintillating
dummy off the base of a Chinnor scrum, one that Rob “Andrew” Atkin would have been
proud of. Drawing a second defender “Big Cook Little Cook” off loaded to Gordon
“Voldemort” Fennel in support. “Voldemort” went to pass to Pete “Shakespeare”
McDermott in full flight on the wing, when a small tremor saw the ball spilt, another
weather anomaly.
Chinnor continue their league campaign next week, and look forward to seeing all their fans
at the next home fixture.
