Chinnor hosted Banbury this week. A windswept day saw the home team attempt to match the conditions by starting the game like a hurricane, taking the game to their opponents
from the off with a series of forward drives and dynamic back moves.
Would Chinnor’s Cement work? Could Banbury cross? Only time would tell.
One such move opened the scoring when “Shoes†Halson went on a rampaging run then found himself with enough space wide out to skip over the line. Will “Getya†Dickinson converted.
Sustaining the tsunami, Banbury conceded a penalty minutes later, allowing Will “Getya†Dickinson to add 3 points from range in the far from ideal conditions.
Chinnor were able to play inside Banbury’s half for the next quarter. “Getya’s†confidence was up as one drop goal attempt followed another. The resulting lineout put the home side in a good attacking position.
Banbury managed to pull a try back when their fly half strolled through a clearly confused Chinnor defence who appeared unaware that they were allowed to tackle him! 10-7.
Waking from this slumber Chinnor refocused. Although at sixes and sevens to start with, they gradually started to work together, and provided solid platform for the backs to work off.
Half time arrived. “Shoes†found himself removed from the fray due to the excessive wind. This made room for the welcome return of Richard “Jabba the†Hutt, who soon set about making a nuisance of himself in the loose.
Chinnor started to take the upper hand. Lance “A lot†Rossitor added two further trys; the first coming from a Banbury mistake in their own 22, after another high kick from “Getya†Dickinson. The second a brilliant individual run starting from inside his own half.
Never one to be outdone by his own team mates, and determined to show them who was in charge, Gordon “Voldemort†Fennell showed that he too could run nearly the length of the field with his slightly more direct approach; this saw him run through rather than round his would be tacklers.
Sadly on this day Voldermote just lacked that little bit of magic required to finish the move and was brought down short of the line.
Further tries from George “Diamond†White and Ben “Erica†Rowe added to Chinnors score.
Thanks this week go to the assistant to the assistant Manager, Mike “Thunderclap†Neuman for his unique style of help from the sideline. To manager Adam “Ant†Woodliffe for putting the team together, and to Andy “Moaning Mertyle†Heley for his descriptive prose.
The IV’s face league leaders Amersham & Chiltern at home this week.
