Wildboys win at Windsor

Wonderful Woodesons with winners

The final game of February saw Chinnor III’s visit the back garden of Her Majesty Elizabeth II, as they faced Windsor II’s.

Chinnor arrived late and went out to warm up in dribs and drabs, meanwhile the Windsor squad were running a well drilled warm up, with players and coaches all fired up for the fixture.

The game started with Windsor receiving the ball from the boot of Rob Nichols, the forwards pressed efficiently and Windsor allowed the ball to bounce. Chinnors new boy Joost excellently stole the ball and set up the base for Jayson Abbot to score the first try of the day. Josh Woodeson slotted the ball over to make it 0-7 to the visitors.

As the game settled in, the Windsor pack found there feet and were dominating at the set pieces and turning over a lot of ball. Chinnor reacted well with the defence that has been evident throughout the season, but the continuing pressure saw a mistake from Chinnor that gifted Windsor a penalty under the posts. The 10 struck it well to reduce the deficit to 3-7.

It was at this point that ‘Wild Bill’ Taylor decided to show up from his shenanigans the night before and was put straight on the pitch. From the restart he collected the ball and crashed the ball up, making an immediate impact. Chinnor stepped up the pressure and some great offloading from the forwards, saw them in the red zone. Josh Woodeson was involved in a ruck, so George White picked up the ball considering a spin pass out to the backs, luckily he opted to crash it up, and was inches from the try line. The ball then went through the hands to the opposite side of the pitch for a touch down from Josh Culbert. The resulting conversion was narrowly missed and the half – time score was 3–12.

In the second half, Chinnor decided they weren’t going to play an awful lot of rugby, but instead would defend for the majority of the half. Once again the defence was ‘Spartan’ like and Windsor were struggling to find a way through.
In one of the few times Chinnor did string together some phases, they were rewarded with a penalty under the posts. This was converted by Josh Woodeson to extend the lead to 3-15.

Windsor reacted well led another attack, Chinnor continued to tackle well, but couldn’t clear their lines. It only took the Chinnor defence to switch of for a minute and Windsor managed to score their first try of the day. The conversion was missed to make the score 8-15. It was at this stage that Guy Hackshaw realised the back-row was too much like hard work and was subbed off due to ‘tiredness’. This saw Rob Nichols move to 6 and Guy Woodeson come on at 10.

It appeared that Windsor had their tails up and the game was seemingly in the balance, however Chinnor responded and received another penalty up in the Windsor half. Will Taylor crashed the ball up and all 8 of the forwards worked a few snap balls forward. Finally Josh Woodeson saw a gap and jinked through to touch down in the corner. His little brother stepped up for the conversion and brilliantly slotted the ball over to make the score 8-22.

Windsor came again with a strong attack, but Chinnor remained defiant to close the game off with a victory. The final whistle blew and the final score was 8 points to Windsor and 22 to Chinnor.

Stand out performances came from scrum half Josh Woodeson and second row Joost, but Man of the Match was awarded to ‘Wild Bill’ Taylor. He also received Mre of the Match for arriving late and for forgetting to pick up Adam Draper who unfortunately then missed the fixture.
