The final game of January was sure to be a spectacle, as it saw Chinnor pay a visit to their old rivals Oxford Harlequins.
The Chinnor 3’s had already turned over Quins when they hosted them earlier in the season and hoped to inflict Quins first home defeat of the season in the second encounter.
The Chinnor team looked strong on paper with George Hope stepping in out of position to join Tom White and Dane White the back row due to Mark Bradburn's continued absence. But a further change was forced on the back row as Tom White turned up late and yellow in complexion as he had been seemingly poisoned the day before. Thus Guy Hackshaw stepped up and played as flanker.
The Chinnor changing room was extremely quiet prior to kick off, but on reflection, this can only be viewed as the calm before the storm. As soon as Quins kick off rolled along the floor, the Chinnor pack secured the ball and after a few phases of play John Down powerfully broke over the line for the first try of the day and to add to his impressive tally. The conversion resulted in a miss from Jayson Abbott; one can only think this was down to his persistent tail bone injury.
Chinnor continued to dominate all around the park, everything that had been talked about after previous weeks seemed to click.
A deft chip through to Abbott saw him tackled without the ball over the try line, resulting in a penalty try being awarded. Abbott saw this as his personal success and celebrated with exuberance.
The metaphorical flood gates opened and Chinnor played exactly how they wanted. The lines ran worked almost every time and saw the score line ticking over in Chinnor’s favour. This coupled with the fact the team tackled and defended with the same prowess that was seen on previous weeks, snuffed out any chance of a Quins resurgence and gave Chinnor a healthy half time lead.
The second half saw Chinnor start as they had finished the first. The freshly introduced George Culbert made an immediate impact, scoring two very well worked tries. The dominance and tries continued for Chinnor, with them sitting pretty with 49 points to 0 towards the end of the match.
Quins clearly didn’t want to be left without any points on the score sheet, so decided to keep giving the ball to their big boy, resulting in an eventual try. Dane White was bitter about this and tried to run through the big guy, only to be smashed right back as though the Quins boy was merely swatting away an annoying fly.
Full time was called with an end result of 5 – 49.
The whole team played fantastically and no more could have been asked of any man. There were numerous stand out performances. Firstly Rob Nichols back on the pitch at 10 after a lengthy ban made an obvious impact. George Culbert coming on in the 2nd half played outstandingly. The whole back row, Dane White with some strong carries, Guy Hackshaw and George Hope, both out of position and both putting themselves about (worryingly for Mark Bradburn and Tom White). It was Hope’s dominance in both attack and defence that saw him awarded as man of the match.
This game showed how this team can play and hopefully will continue to do so in the coming weeks.
