Chinnor win in the mud

Dave Winpenny25 Nov 2014 - 06:43

Triumphant III's win again.

A short trip down the M40 saw Chinnor 3's face Amersham and Chiltern 2's, a team that are always well drilled and who managed to take maximum points from Chinnor last season.

It was a fixture that would see Chinnor leap frog Amersham to 4th place in the BBO1 league if they came away with a victory.

Without the injured John Down, Dane White, Dan Cundy, Tom White and James Way, not to mention the further absence of Rob Nichols, Captain George White still managed to field a side and a fantastic side it appeared to be on paper.

It was a fantastic team on paper, but it showed to be better than that on the pitch, Jeff Cole looked dangerous from the off and some great team play saw him get over right in the corner to put Chinnor up 5-0.

Amersham fought back and forced Chinnor into some disciplinary mistakes, eventually allowing Amersham a penalty right in front of the posts, closing the gap to 5-3.

The Chinnor forwards again looked powerful and were dominant in all set pieces, it was a turned over scrummage that provided the backs with the platform to see a well formed drill being touched down by the impressive Nathan Napier to take the score to 10-3.

Again Amersham began to play the rugby that Chinnor were used to seeing last season, once again pinning Chinnor back and forcing more discipline issues. They were again awarded a penalty to narrow the gap again to 10-6. This is how the score remained when the referee blew the half time whistle.

At half-time Captain George White made a number of changes which honourably included himself seeing Joe Winpenny take the lead on the pitch.

Soon into the second half Chinnor's disciplinary issues resulted in them losing a player as the experienced Trevor Powell was sent for a 10 minute rest. This saw Amersham try to capitalise on having an extra player, however Chinnor responded by playing their best rugby of the game. Every player tackled hard, cleared their lines, then re-set and went again. By the time Powell was back on the pitch, the score line had not altered.

With the full compliment back on the pitch, Chinnor decided to play some attacking rugby and from a solid set piece from all eight of the forwards, Ben Newman gave a crisp pass to Harry Hillier who audaciously stroked a drop goal straight through the middle of the posts. Chinnor's lead was extended to 13-6.

The Chinnor players did not rest on their laurels and felt a boost of confidence when their beloved captain returned to the field. He clearly made a difference in the scrum and around the break down. Chinnor wild boys pushed hard again which saw more well run lines and again saw a typical hard running line from Jayson Abbot to see him touch down, taking the lead to 18-6. Nathan Napier converted for the first time of the day, 20-6 to Chinnor.

The next score came from a hard defensive line from the Chinnor boys, forcing Amersham to drop the ball. Hillier managed to get his foot on the ball and dribbled it over the try line, touching down to take the lead to 25-6.

Every player in the black and white shirts played out of them and the true Chinnor spirit showed through on the pitch. The final try of the day highlighted this, as every man played a part in it. Strong forward play sent the ball out to the backs, the ball unselfishly passed through all the back's hands resulting in a perfect pass from Abbot to Jeff Cole to see him score his second try of the game.
