New & returning players bring success

New & returning players bring success

Dave Winpenny21 Oct 2014 - 07:30

New players make the difference; together with some of the old boys as well!

With a strong team this week and a few new players the confidence was back in the side. Chinnor also had their returning captain, George White, which clearly gave the boys that extra lift. The new players including George Hope, Jayson Abbott and Ben Quarman all proved to play a vital part in the final score.

The first 5 minutes were good from both sides, with hard hitting tackles flying in. An early penalty gave Chinnor the chance to get onto the scoreboard first, but was unfortunately missed by Dan Cundy, who was standing in for the absent Pete Way. Chinnor seemed to of got to grips with their set pieces, as the scums and lineouts were a huge improvement from last weeks efforts.

On the 20 minute mark, the ball was chipped over the defending Harlequins back line for it to be followed up by a strong run by John Down who fell on the ball giving Chinnor the vital 5 points. The conversion shortly followed - 7-0 to Chinnor.

Hard hitting defensive from George Hope, Jayson Abbott and Jeff Cole kept Oxford away until 10 minutes before half time, when they touched over for their first 5 points. The Harlequins kicker was having problems with his kicking tee, so decided to slot it over with a drop goal - 7-7.

The 2nd half was well fought out by both sides, with the ref making a few controversial decisions for both teams. Dane White failed to play in the 2nd half due to "illness" presumably caused from the night before. However Chinnor fought on well, and with some solid scrums it gave the backs a decent platform to make some hard yards. Dan Cundy hit the post from a penalty attempt with about 15 mins to go and was then sent to the bin for 10 mins shortly after for using his feet in the ruck, which the ref deemed inappropriate. It turned out Chinnor played better without him as they stepped it up a gear to try and settle the game in our favour. The decision to go for a try rather than an attempt at the sticks with about 3 or 4 mins to go, turned out to be the right decision as Tom White battled over for an excellent game winning try. This was converted by Guy Hackshaw.

A great result for the Chinnor boys, who are now looking forward to next weeks battle with Witney.

Final Score 14-7
