Wildboys unbeaten after wet win on the road

I’m back…

After a long hiatus filled with binge watching Bridgetown, I have my work cut with Lady Whistledown around, and avoiding catching covid I’m back for a league fixture.

It was with sad news I heard about captain fantastic George white stepping down from the wild boys. We shared many a moment together, from long beach walks to cosy nights in with a glass or two of John smits. I’m sure I will share a story or two with you in due course. Anyway the reason why you are here…

After Reading cried off the first game of the season the wild boys had a tough first encounter with Amersham and Chiltern on 2nd October 2021. With the Wildboys looking to kick off the season with an away win at Amersham and Chiltern they were looking to start strong and that’s exactly what they did. With tremendous pressure from the very first kick the wildboys saw themselves make camp in the A&C 22 and some busting runs and scrum (scrums will be mentioned a lot) dominance led to the beastly George ‘gorgeous’ Hope beating his man and crashing over for the try of the game, with Gary ‘Lyons’ Lowe adding the extras the score quickly became 7-0 to the visitors.

The scrum dominance continuing and with multiple exchanges of kicks and block busting runs. Chinnor worked their way back into the heavily defended 22 of A&C. Multiple strong bruising phases from the forwards led to Sam ‘the Log’ Ludgate smashing over for yet another try this season bringing his count up to 3 in 2 games, what a prolific players, once again with a converted kick the score carried on rising. 14-0

At this point everything looked like smooth sailing on a pitch that was surprisingly holding up quite well with the amount of scrums that had been taking place. Soon the home side seized their first chance of the day by pinning Chinnor down off the back of consecutive penalties and managed to dot over for their first of the day to make it 14-5.

At this point it was time to call on the finishers, on trots the experienced figure of one Mr Guy ‘mare’ Hackshaw and debuts for the young guns Tom ‘Wheels’ Wilson and Ben ‘5 A*’ Mulholland. After some great phases including backs and forwards a storming run saw Dan ‘Giraffe’ Thomas break the resilient defense and found himself in the backfield with only the fullback to beat, Producing a lovely offload he sends debutant Ben over for his first try on his Wildboys debut making the score 21-5.

After a storming run off of a cross field kick the young Tom finds himself bumping and weaving through half the team yet finds himself receiving a yellow card for what can only be described as a moment of misjudgment.

After this, Amersham & Chiltern piled on the pressure and yet again Chinnor finding themselves pinned back in their own 22 valiantly fight off constant waves of attackers. With the pressure building up Amersham & Chiltern manage to squeeze over in the corner after a stint of sustained attack and some fierce tackling and stubborn defense to make the score 21-12 with just 10 minutes left on the clock.

With mere minutes on the clock and Chinnor desperately fighting to hold on to their lead and see out this contest. In a clash of 9’s our captain finds himself joining the subs as he receives a yellow himself just as Chinnor were due to return to a full 15

With the last play of the game upon us Amersham & Chiltern attempt a grubber through in the wet slippery conditions but just as they are about to gather it the experience of Hackshaw shines through and for once decides to use his feet instead of his hands and sometimes knees to dispatch the ball clearly into touch forcing the ref to end the game and see Chinnor victorious.

Credit to the brave players of A&C for putting up a truly magnificent battle in these biblical conditions and also to everyone who came to watch even though some may have had a smile or two when our captain was dismissed.

Man of the match went to an outstanding Dean Collins who is showing all of those extra training sessions with the Sh1’s is paying off

Mare went to Dan Coulon who despite his best efforts to throw everybody under the bus managed to finish his pint and sausage roll in a record 10 minutes.

Until next time stay Wild
