Wildboys Livin' on a Prayer

On the 2nd of March 2019 the Chinnor Wildboys were travelling to Maidenhead to ensure the BBO1 league was well and truly put to bed. A win here would ensure that they couldn’t be caught in the last few fixtures of the season, and would crown them victorious. 57 years previously the American singer-songwriter, Mr. Jon Bon Jovi was born and songs from him will be littered throughout this match report for no reason at all.

The Wildboys squad was looking as strong as ever while captain George White offered his words of encouragement before kick-off. He said In These Arms live the infamous Man Mountain and I will lead you to victory. Kick off was received by the Wildboys but after some simple handling errors the ball was back with Maidenhead. Some direct running saw their centre run straight through the middle which was very uncharacteristic of the Wildboys defence, and a simple pass to beat the fullback earn Maidenhead the first points of the game. This was confidently converted and certainly the Wildboys took note.

Shortly after Father Time, Mr. Mark Bradburn, went down with a rather hurty foot so was replaced by Alan ‘Cosher’ Cawston who whispered to Mark you were Born to Be My Baby as he had gifted him 75 mins of game time. The Wildboys needed to stay controlled and settled and cries from the crowd bellowed across ‘Keep the Faith’ which seemed to do the job as shortly after Thudbutt had thundered across the line to score a much needed 5 points. Converted by the ever reliable Harry Hillier the Wildboys were back in it. Shortly after, a quick blindside play by Bobby Nichols saw him put in young Harry Lowe. He had some work to do, and skilfully skipped past 1 defender, and around another giving Maidenhead a taste of their own Bad Medicine. Again, converted by The Bomb the score stood at 7-14.

Next up was the soft skinned young-looking Mr Daniel Coulon. Like a Runaway he skirted around the edges, shaking his hips as he went, and darted over for the Wildboys 3rd. Bomber sent the honours over, and they were now in a much more comfortable position. A lot of hard work was going on around the parquet with 1 through to 8 working around the breakdown very superbly, and dominating at the scrum. Like a Bed of Roses this gave the backline a strong platform to play off. The centre partnership of Jayson Abbott and Thadious were proving a sturdy option in the middle while Bobby was hollering remarks from the back, accompanied by Harry Lowe and Guy Hackshaw on the flanks. After some hard work from the front row in getting to the right area of the pitch, Bobert sold one of his going out of fashion dummies, and trundled on over for the bonus point try. At half time, and Bomber sending the 2 points over the score stood at 7-28.

Maidenhead came into the 2nd half with a lot of hope, however it was clear that they had the wrong sort of hope. Next up on the scoresheet was Mr. George Hope, who cantered over for a well-deserved Wildboys try and again Harry Hillier who had been In and Out of Love with the uprights this season, sent it straight over.

The game then got slightly stagnant but not without chances. Chris Jeffcock ran a lovely supporting line, shouting for the ball to get “In These Arms” but alas, it didn’t. A red card was shown to a Maidenhead player who wanted the Wildboys Dead or Alive but he never had his chance. The full time whistle was blown, and the score stood at 7-35. The Wildboys were elated, and were Livin’ on a Prayer. The paparazzi snapped some shots of them under the sticks just before they all headed back in for a well earned John Smiths now being crowned BBO1 Champions.

There were a couple of votes for Mare of the Match for some soft play, but as expected Jeffrey won this accolade for not being able to catch a rugby ball, or run fast, and being called a weasel. The Man of the Match votes were spread between Jayson Abbott who had worked tirelessly throughout the game, Dan Coulon, who had controlled the game well and scored a super try, and Totsy, who generally played his heart out. But this week the votes were split between Harry Lowe and George Hope, for a great finish and a fantastic turn over, and disrupting lineouts and strong tackling, respectively. This was followed by One Wild Night for the Wildboys who deservedly let off some steam. Until next time, keep it wild!
