The Henley Horse Bolted

On the 16th of February 1677 the Earl of Shaftesbury was arrested a confined to the Tower of London. 342 years later, Henley were trying to shaft the Wildboys by bringing their second team in the Trojan House guise of the Henley Vikings. The Wildboys were aware that this could well be the case and they were relishing the opportunity to prove their worth.
There were a few of the regulars missing, but with the return of Nicholas “The Grizzly” Harrison and with Sam “Big Daddy” Angell changing allegiance in favour of the Wildboys all in all the team was looking rather tasty.
The game commenced and it seemed as though the Henley side were slightly surprised by the Wildboys and before long they were caught with their pants down and the glorious lope of Max Wood carried the ball over for the first try of the afternoon. The conversion was slotted and the Wildboys were 7 points up.
Dan “Hippy Hippy Shake” Coulon was the next to pounce over the line for another converted try and the Wildboys were 14 points clear. It was at this point that Henley realised the wheels were coming off the Trojan Horse and they better start playing before it looked more like a Donkey.
The Wildboys were pinned back on their line, but they defended slightly better than the inhabitants of Troy. There were big tackles flying in and they held off the barrage of the Henley big boys for a good 10 minutes. Eventually some quick hands saw the ball go wide and Henley dived over for their first try of the day. It was converted and the score stood at 14-7.
The half time whistle blew and both teams looked as if they were enjoying this encounter. Some steadying words came from each of the Wildboys and they were ready to go once more.
The next two scores were from Wildboys, Sam “Ah Boy” Ludgate and Max “Ab Attack” Williams, both were converted by “Big Sam 2.0” Angell.
Henley managed to claw back a converted try to make the score 28-14, but this wolf in sheep’s clothing became a lamb to the slaughter when Harry “had a rig” Franklin burst through the defence to score a superb try. It was once again converted and the score ended 35-14.
It was a fantastic display from the Wildboys and all 18 players proved their worth.
Man of the Match would always be tough on a day when all players put in such fine performances. Nominations went to Tom White for his tackles and work load and for getting a hurty face, Harry Franklin for his barraging runs and great impact and both Sam Angell and Nick Harrison for their distribution, however this week the accolade was shared between Max Wood for his solid defence and damaging runs, and George Hope for his all-round dominance.
Mare of the Match was tough for the same reasons as man, however this week the Mare of the Match was awarded to Max Wood for dropping a high ball and for being mocked by his mother.
Until next time, keep it wild…
