The Wildboys make it 57 as Dolly turns 73

On the 19th January 1946 the world welcomed the birth of one of country music’s all-time greats, Dolly Parton. In her 73 years Dolly has managed to have 25 songs hit the top spot on the Billboard country music charts, a record for a female artist. She has had 41 top-10 country albums, a record for any artist. She has had 110 charted singles over the past 40 years and has reportedly composed over 3000 songs.
On Dolly’s 73rd Birthday the Wildboys were hosting Amersham and Chiltern, in what was sure to be a thrilling encounter.
It was a glorious afternoon for rugby and the day had so far been graced with ‘the light of a clear blue morning,’ the team were looking rather beautiful, each of them a ‘heartbreaker,’ and with that the Skipper George White readied his men and yelled ‘I really got the feeling.’
Chinnor were at once on the front foot and thought they had scored as the ball was collected from the back of a ruck by Dan Coulon, it then went from ‘9 to 5,’ seeing Mark Bradburn glide down the wing, he then released George White who dived over the line, only to be flagged as having stepped into touch.
The deadlock was soon broken and Tom Strathdee wound his way through the Amersham defence like ‘the river unbroken’ and touched down for the first score of the day.
Tom White was next to score, he took the ball in to contact and Sam Jones made sure he was ‘travelin through' and together they powered over for Tom to touch down. Tom thanked Sam for the assistance, exclaiming ‘I will always love you’ only for Sam to reply ‘but you know I love you.’
The game continued and with the form the Wildboys were in, the Amersham team thought ‘it’s sure gonna hurt.’ They were right and soon the ‘dumb blonde’ Max Wood was helping himself to a try.
It was Harry ‘bargain store’ Lowe who scored next followed by another from Tom Strathdee. The Amersham defence looked up and they said ‘here you come again,’ yet Strat was running like a ‘travelin man’ and powered over for his second.
The Wildboys very own ‘Romeo,’ George Hope, helped himself to a couple of tries in quick succession and Amersham were now surely thinking ‘why, why, why.’
The next try came from Dan Coulon, who as usual wound his way through, showing ‘the little things’ can do it too.
Finally, there was one more for the ‘heartbreak express’ known as George Hope. Seven conversions, although it seems there was ‘something fishy’ as only 6 on the match card, made the score 57-0. Each one notched over by Harry Hillier who let his team mates know ‘there’s more where that came from.’
There were many men nominated for the man of the match accolade, Jon Goodson, Jayson Abbott, Harry Hillier and George Hope all received votes. But ‘silver and gold’ went to Tom White and Tom Strathdee respectively, with Strathdee undoubtably the ‘star of the show.’
Mare of the match was a different story and came from what was most definitely the moment of the match. Tom Mccorkell and Chris Jeffcock broke away like ‘islands in a stream’ and were passing their way around the defence. Just when it looked like Chris was in for a try, he said to Mccorkell ‘welcome home’ and gave him ‘the greatest gift of all,’ an easy run in and a debut try for the Wildboys. Tom had different ideas and like a ‘dagger through the heart’ he started blowing so dived for the line for a dramatic slide in, only to come up short. As the crowd, opposition and his team mates jeered he felt the ‘burning’ embarrassment and screamed ‘daddy come and get me.’
It was another fine performance from the Wildest of boys and next week they travel to Bracknell for a top of the table clash, until then keep it wild…
You know you love me
