The fossils still shine

On the 6th October 1948 Paleoanthropologist Mary Leakey found the first partial fossilised skull of Proconsul africanus, an ancestor of apes and humans on Rusinga Island, Kenya. Fast forward 70 years to see the Wildboys face Amersham and Chiltern in what will be an epic encounter.
Although the Wildboys may have a few of their own fossils, with the likes of Mark "father time” Bradburn, Tom "Peter Pan" White and Harry "dad bod" Hillier, you can still really see how the human race has successfully evolved from looking at the handsome men in the Wildboys squad.

The day looked bleak, it was raining cats and dogs with the surface as wet as I was when I saw the Wildboys. The starting team looked as strong as ever, although there were a few regulars missing, like Jon "Ralph" Goodson going home to see his mummy and Rob "blobert" Nichols selfishly going away with his lady friend. However, this pathed a way for some young guns to get their first caps, the likes of Adam "baby face" Pipkin and Ben "eat my dust" Macintosh.

The game starts on this miserable day with Harry "dad bod" sending it high. Amersham were clearly pumped for this game, which showed from there hard lines and well drilled game plays. They started rattling the Wildboys slightly and the boys found themselves on the back foot. This was an unusual portion for the Wildboys who were forced to bring out their well-known defence in the early parts of the game. But it did not take long for the boys to find their momentum and start attacking like animals. They had soon battled up the pitch with some hard lines and, although wet and slippery, some graceful hands. You could feel the first try approaching. They did not let us down with Harry Hillier doing a Robert Nicholsesque show and go he scampered away and powered those quads over the line. Chris "skinny" Jeffcock, the new found kicker, slotted it. 7-0 go on boys.
Amersham did not take this lightly and soon were back in the Wildboys 22 they hit hard but the wall of the Wildboys did not crumble. They must have been asking what they had to do to score. After a few mistakes from them and the Wildboys solid scrum the boys were on the push again. Some hard lines from the likes of Tommy "cankles" White and Harry "The barrel" Franklin put the Wildboys on the front foot again. Some steady rucking gave Dan "chunky monkey" Coulon a solid platform for him to make a lovely snipe which resulted in him getting over the line. Once again converted by skinny.

Amersham tried to rally once again, and it seemed now they had 16 men with ref starting to give everything against the Wildboys and soon Amersham had a penalty in the Wildboys 22. What should they do? and with Harry "bomber" Hillier getting in the 10s head, they bottled it and just went for 3 which they slotted 3-14 on the half time whistle.
Second half began with Amersham kicking high and deep, yet again tots "George Dawes " Rackstraw was on the end of it and charging up the field with some huge hand offs, something Wild Bill would be proud of. He set the tone for the second half and the Wildboys had their tails up. However, the ref still wanted to keep them down, calling 2 forward passes that clearly went backwards. One of which saw George "the face" Hope sling a beautiful hail Mary pass out to Max "weasel" Wood, who was off charging down the wing in which would have been most certainly a try.
Time to bring on some fresh legs. Ben McIntosh, Adam Pipkin and Tom Strathdee all came on and hit the ground running. They all added their own flare, Strathdee hitting some devastating lines, Ben Mac using his speed on the wing and Pipkin pulling the strings at 10. It didn't take long for the boys to once again get over the line with Tommy "morph" White getting his 3rd of the season, he truly is in some form. Once again tots "he's a baby" Rackstraw collected the restart and once again made some lovely yards. The boys built from there and were closing Amersham out. A beautiful play down the blind side saw captain George "ever seen such big arms?" White use his silky feet and hands to give a tremendous off load to Guy "hands like feet" Hacksaw who just had to catch it to be in, but sadly he dropped it. After regaining the ball, the Wildboys pushed on, eager for that 4th bonus point try. George "The face" Hope made a powerful dive to the line but sadly the ref blew to stop the game for a head injury and the player down was our very own Harry "can't last the 80" Franklin. Try disallowed. Hopey was clearly frustrated and took it out on Amersham’s no.15 who was on the end of a devastating spear. Ouchy. 10 mins remained and the Wildboys really needed the bonus point. Never fear Strathdee is here. He picked a gorgeous line and Adam "puppet master" Pipkin found him just at the right moment. There was no stopping him from there. Boom 4 tries. Sadly the conversation was missed.
It was too late for Amersham and both teams were glad to hear the final whistle to get out of the horrendous weather and into the warm. 24-3 to the Wildboys in what was a tough fought game. They obviously celebrated with some well earned John Smiths.
Man of the match was a once again a hard fought contest, Sam “the bull” Ludgate, George “Faye’s Hunk” Hope and both of the dashing White brothers all receiving nominations, but this week the out and out winner was Tots “I need a wee” Rackstraw for his hard work and hard lines.
Mare of the match was less of a contest and this week went to Guy Hackshaw, mainly because when in doubt, vote Hacky, but also for the three dropped balls in try scoring positions.

Big game next against Bracknell at home. COME ON THE BOYS! Until then keep it wild…
You know you love me
