"Victory"is the word of the day

The 29th of September 2018 marks 260 years since the birth of one of the all-time great naval commanders Horatio Nelson. Lord Nelson was noted for his inspirational leadership, grasp of strategy, and unconventional tactics, which together resulted in a number of decisive British naval victories, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars. A similar description could be used for Captain George White, who on Nelsons 260th Birthday lead out the Wildboys to face their Villeneuve of the day, which came in the form of Windsor II’s.
Lord Nelson’s most notable victory and subsequent death was aboard the HMS Victory, and it was the ships namesake that the Wildboys aspired to achieve on this sunny Saturday afternoon.
As the starting kick was lofted up, the ball hung in the air alongside the late September sun and as it returned to earth the battle commenced. The Wildboys started the game with a fury similar to the British fleet at the battle of Trafalgar, taking just 5 minutes to bag their first try of the game. A well drilled lineout saw the pack march over the line and the Wildboys own Nelson, Captain George White touched down in the corner, the resulting conversion was missed and the Wildboys led 5 points to 0.
From this point onward there was a consistent flurry of points being scored, a combination of dominance at the breakdown and set-pieces from the forwards and sharp running lines for the backs saw tries scored by Max ‘Weasel’ Woods, Big Jon Down and Guy Hackshaw. In true Wildboys form this made the score 20-0 and meant that a total of 8 points had so far been left behind.
Windsor continued to battle hard against the in form Wildboys, but to no avail, another try was scored by Max Wood, who was having a blast galloping through and around the Windsor defence, this was swiftly followed by the try of the day from Chris Jeffcock, running the perfect line in under the posts. Before the half time whistle there were further tries scored by Sam Jones, Jayson ‘Bert’ Abbott and number 2 from Chris Jeffcock. However, in a strange change of tactic, each of these tries were converted by the now no.1 kicker, Chris Jeffcock, who had an eye for goal as accurate as the French sharp shooter who ended Nelson life.
The half-time talk was brief and the with the score now 55-0, the main aim was to keep Windsor’s score at 0. Windsor did create some chances, but the typical stoic defence from the Wildboys held off the threat, instead they scored more tries. Big Sam Jones got his second of the day, Robert Nichols used a surprising show and go to find himself trotting under the posts and Sam Ludgate chasing his huge tally from last season powered over for one. All of these were not converted as Chris Jeffcock was having a breather and the score stood at 70-0.
The tumultuous tide of Wildboys tries continued to flow, Tom White sniped over, shortly followed by one for George Hope and another for Tom White, who had a look of shock as the defending Windsor player slipped off him to leave him able to jaunt over for his second of the day. Harry Hillier who had returned to the fold after a 15 minute breather notched each of these conversions making the score 91-0.
The penultimate try was a glorious passage of play that saw Harry Lowe dance through the defence and then throw an outrageous offload into the hands of Guy Hackshaw who ran in his number 2 which was slotted by Chris Jeffcock. The final try marked a hattrick for the weasel Max Wood who Windsor simply could not handle, unfortunately Jeffcock marred his 100% kicking record and the score was left at 103-0.
Man of the match was a difficult task and unsurprisingly there were many mentions, Mark Bradburn received a vote for his barraging run and a hand-off that nearly took of the recipients head, Tots Rackstraw received votes for his slippery, buttery run and his shift throughout the game. Guy Hackshaw, Robert Nichols, Big Sam and of course George Hope all received a vote, but the runaway nominations went to Max Wood, who took 4 votes for his galloping runs and Chris Jeffcock who took the accolade, receiving 8 votes for his excellent performances at both 11 and 6 and for his accuracy off the tee.
Mare of the match was seemingly an easier decision with all but 1 vote going to the captain of the Wildboys 2.0, Mr Benjamin ‘the Slug’ Rowe, for failing to organise anything.
Next week the Wildboys travel to Amersham and Chilton for their first away game of the season, until then keep it wild…
You know you love me.
