On the 6th January 1979 the UK charts were topped by a new upcoming band known as the Village People with their cult classic the Y.M.C.A. Shift time forward 39 years and there was no need to feel down as the Wildboys were in a new town ready to play their first fixture of 2018.
The opponents were Amersham and Chiltern in a fixture which the year before saw the Wildboys finish second. However, this time around the Wildboys picked themselves of the ground and they weren’t about to put their pride on the shelf, they were looking to get back on their way to the top of the table.
As the game started, it seemed as a few individuals had a few too many pigs in blankets over the festive period and the Wildboys did not appear their usual sprightly selves. After running around for a period and burning off the remaining clog of brandy butter that lined their arteries, the boys began to play some rugby. Amersham defended well and were very quick up on the back line, forcing the forwards to work around the fringes. Soon the hardwork paid off and Sam Ludgate powered over for the first try of the day. Harry Hillier notched over the conversion to put the score at 0-7.
A and C responded well and scored a try themselves, the conversion was missed and the score was 5-7. They then doubled the scoreline with another try that was gifted to them due to a dodgy pass that was intercepted and the Wildboys trailed 10-7. Some strong words under the posts saw a lot of finger pointing and questioning of the way the game was being marshalled. The bickering eventually ceased and the Wildboys resumed their attempts to win the game.
A big push and some excellent individual displays saw tries for both Max Williams and Tots Rackstraw, both neatly converted by Harry Hillier. All that remained was for a push for the bonus point, and with minutes left on the clock the Amersham full back was ushering the ball out over the dead ball line, only for Robert Nichols to burst into a canter and dive onto the ball for what was surely the bonus point try?? There was nothing from the fullback or the crowd near the ball that would suggest it was anything other than a try, however it was questionably adjudged that it was not, leaving the final score 10-19 in favour of the Wildboys.
It was a tough first fixture of the New Year, but the Wildboys dug in well and ground out a victory at a place which often sees the result go the other way.
There were only a few players mentioned for the title of man of the match, Mark Bradburn got a shout for his hard work around the park and for remembering how to ruck. Max Williams and Sam Ludgate shared the lions share of the votes for their dominant displays in both attack and defence, with Sam narrowly taking the accolade.
Mare of the Match saw a few players get a single vote, but there was one who had a few more votes and this week it was Max Wood who took the crown for the intercepted try.
Next week the Wildboys face Bracknell for a top of the table clash for what could well be the league decider, until then, keep it wild…
