16th of October saw Bracknell come to the fortress of Chinnor RFC. On this day in 1974 US president Gerald Ford announces conditional amnesty for US Vietnam war deserters. 43 years later captain George White finds himself in the same position declaring amnesty to the deserters of the Wildboys Bracknell battle.
With a few boys missing the wildboys still managed to form a strong starting line up to take the stage. In the first 10 minutes it was clear the absentees were not overly missed, the wildboys came out firing. Soon the Stags gave away a penalty on their 10 metre line. This saw James Peaches Way take to the tee, a perfect strike pit the score at 3-0. The Wildboys continued to dominate and the scrums were powerful, Max Williams was held up on the line, the resulting scrum saw the Wildboys power forward, followed with a quick bit of hands in the backs, putting Adam Draper in open space... try time. Conversion made by Peaches 10-0, a great start.
This is where the boys then started to lose composure and started to give away penalty after penalty, seeing Harry Franklin sin binned. These penalties helped see Bracknell over the line for their first score 10-7. Shortly after another penalty saw them slot the kick 10-10. Half time
After some strong words in the team talk the second half began. Again the Wildboys started strong with some good team play which ended with Franklin getting on the score sheet. Conversion made, 17-10. But it seemed every time the Wildboys scored they would let their composure go and Bracknell capitalised on this, 17-17.
The Wildboys reacted and powered Franklin over the line for his second, the conversion was missed, 22-17.
Once again it was the same story, the Wildboys gave penalty after penalty, Bracknell saw a chance to take 3 points 22-20 entering the last 10mins of the game. Squeaky bum time!
The Wildboys started attacking well and in a solid position the game could be ours just hold out for 10 mins. However, he who shall not be named, slung a pass, hoping to use the centre’s to exploit the gap, but the Stags winger was too quick and took the interception for a pitch length try. Conversion missed and the Wildboys trailed 22-25.
Last 5 mins... dig deep boys! A great starting kick saw the Wildboys regain the ball and stacked deep into Bracknells 22. This could be the chance! Bracknell got flustered and gave a penalty straight in front of the posts. It was a case of go for the win or go for the guaranteed draw. Captain White was without his counsel, but finally he chose to take the kick and secure a draw and in turn the Wildboys 2 year home record. The Wildboys kicker (who also shall not be named) took a long time lining up the kick. He moved, striking the ball... Have we done it is it through??........
Final whistle. 22-25. The fortress has fallen. Time to re-build it Wildboys.
Man of the match was Sam Ludgate who put in a real shift.
Mare of the match was the first of the he who shall not be named!
On wards and up wards boys. Until next time keep it wild...
