Le Bon, Le Mauvais et Le Hacky

Gossip Girl23 Mar 2017 - 17:09

The Good, The Bad, and The Hacky

31 years ago, the beloved hero to the Wildboys, Simon Le Bon nearly died when the yacht he was racing capsized. The footage that saw Simon safe and sound back on land, famously caught him with his pants down. This situation is similar to how the Wildboys would feel if they could not keep their top spot in the league, by beating Reading Abbey at Peppard Road, RG4 8XA.
With a few players unavailable, captain George White looked to his ever growing reserve players whose presence eased any worries. Tom Warner making a favourable return kept the front row as strong as ever, likewise with Harry Franklin who made his Wildboys debut.
Within minutes of kick off captain George White was thudding his butt over the try line, giving the Wildboys the perfect start they had wanted. Next up was Guy Hackshaw, who weaved his way around the defence and kept the momentum going for an excellent individual try. This time James Tweeter Way converted making the scores 0-12. These first few tries unlocked the Wildboys budding enthusiasm for today’s encounter and before long team tries were flooding in. On the score board came Tom White, Max Williams, and Mark Bradburn with the latter being of great excitement for the fans. Two of these 3 tries were converted by James Tweeter Way making the score 0-31.
Just before half time a fine display of breakdown work by Mark Bradburn, Tom White, and Harry Franklin saw the ball quickly recycled by Dan Coulon and released Max Wood for his first of the game.
At half time the score stood at 0-38 and although it looked like it was an easy affair, it was clear the Wildboys had been working hard for their efforts, and had been playing some excellent rugby against a hardy Reading Abbey side.
John Down who’s welcome return at centre scored a well worked try about 10 mins into the second half shortly before Wildboys replacement Scotty Hall got sinbinned for repeat offending. This somewhat encouraged the Wildboys to work even harder, and although the Reading Abbey penalty fell short they seemed hungry for points. Guy Hackshaw was next on the scoreboard as the backs looked completely in control of their opposite numbers, with Tweeter converting making the score 0-52.
A further 2 tries then again came from Guy Hackshaw, who was making the most of playing on the wing with both of these being converted by Max Wood as Pete Way had been replaced by an fervent Will Bhagat. With the last play of the game called by the ref, the Wildboys could almost taste the John Smiths which influenced their final set piece move which saw Max Wood break the defence line well within his own half, who then offloaded to the supporting Rob Nichols who finally found Chris Jeffcock who finished off a splendid try in the corner.
The full time score was 0-71 and although the score line might say differently, the Reading Abbey boys fought to the end and made the infamous Wildboys work hard for their well-deserved win.
Man of the Match this week was awarded to Guy Hackshaw who scored 4 tries and looked dangerous with ball in hand all game, however because he’s Guy Hackshaw he was also awarded Mare of the Match as he did a pathetic hand signal highlighting he had scored a hatrick after his third.
With the final run of 3 games remaining, all to be held at Kingsey road, the Wildboys hope to finish off the season with an impressive display of rugby, so until then, keep it wild…
