'Rhythm is something you either have or don't have, but when you have it, you have it all over'

On the 28th January 1956 for the first time in American television history an appearance by the ‘King of Rock and Roll’, Elvis Presley, but enough of that let’s have a little less conversation. Jump forward 61 years and you will have found the Chinnor Wildboys welcoming Reading IIs to Kingsey Road for battle on the 1XV pitch. Coincidently the average age for the Reading side was also 61 years, so for them it was now or never. Reading were way down the league table in 10th place however a recent win against Windsor would of given them hope as the Wildboys performance against Windsor was not a pretty one.
From deep with in the ghetto the Wildboys had drafted in Andy Darlington who covered the otherwise preoccupied Jon Goodson. William ‘Wild Bill’ Taylor was also absent and it is starting to appear his burning love for the Wilboys is crying in the chapel.
The first 10 minutes for the Wildboys were sublime as they looked like devils in disguise as they trotted over the line 3 times in quick succession. Our prolific place kicker Will Jones was slotting over the conversions and was very much becoming the Wildboys good luck charm. The game then evened out a little as the Wildboys became slightly complacent and started giving away several penalties. Reading however were still all shook up from the initial flurry of tries and the Wildboys scored another two before the half time whistle. The tries had come from Adam Draper, Jayson Abbott, Peter Way, Max Williams and Sam Ludgate with the big hunk o’love Adam Draper already attaining his hatrick. Will Jones had managed to convert 5 out of the 7 tires which adds up to 45-0 at half time.
The 2nd half saw the welcome arrival of the hound dog Mark Bradburn, who’s hurty calf appears to be no longer hurty. Captain George White took a back seat and let Garin Nicholls sit up front and Will Bhagat came on the wing as he had just finished writing his love letters to Tom Jarvis.
It was clear that Reading were not going to surrender as they came out with a little more fire at the start of the 2nd half. They scored 2 surprising tries as the Wildboys defence momentarily lapsed in concentration, and this saw a now moody blue George White run on after the 2nd try and give the Wildboys a stern talking to. The decision was made to not compete at any breakdown as it became apparent the Wildboys only had to look at the ref funny and he would give a penalty to the resilient Reading side.
As the 2nd half settled, the Wildboys started to run in their final tries of the game. Debutant Andy Darlington careered over for a well worked try, and Dan Coulon found a bit of space around a breakdown and sprinted the rest of the pitch for a great solo effort. Shortly after he was substituted as he had picked up a hurty head, for Peter Way who was more than happy to take up the 9 position. Adam Draper got on the score board again this half taking his tally up to 4 and Jayson Abbott got his 2nd. The final try came from Max Wood who received a pass from the unusually quiet Rob Nichols who had made a short break through the Reading backline.
With a quick rock a hula baby the final score was 74-14, a score line more recognisable for the infamous Wildboys. Some stand out performances came from Adam Draper, Sam Ludgate, Chris Jeffcock, Andy Darlington, Tom White and Jayson Abbott who all received a Man of the Match nomination. But the Man of the Match went to someone who is always on my mind, Mr Tom Rackshaw who tackled his heart out all game. The Mare of the Match, unlike its counter award, only had 1 nomination and this went to George Hope who felt it necessary to kiss his hard headed woman immediately after the game.
Next weeks’ match will be against Amersham & Chiltern IIs and this match will prove vital in the Wildboys efforts to go undefeated throughout an entire season, so until then keep it wild…
You know you love me
