On the 7th of January 2017 the Wildboys hoped to start the new year off with a solid win and a fine performance against Windsor who were also hoping for similar things. Rewind 19 years to the time that Monica Lewinsky signed an affidavit denying her affair with Bill Clinton. Like Lewinsky, hopefully the Wildboys would not blow the job at hand.
Before long after kick off Windsor had a penalty in front of the posts and to get on the score board early they confidently converted. This was a wake up call for the Wildboys as they seemed sluggish from an overindulging period full of festivities. Jayson Abbott then settled the Wildboys as he bowled over from a strong run for the first try of the game followed by a successful conversion knocked over by Peter Way.
Shortly after however, the Wildboys discipline cost them again as they gave away another penalty within kicking distance. This again was struck with precision and sailed over the uprights making the score 6-7 to the Wildboys.
The game then got a little stagnant as both sides fought for territory however some big hits were seen by the likes of George Hope and Max Williams. Ollie Jackson was next on the scoreboard as he touched down for the Wildboys 2nd, however the conversion was missed.
At half time the scores stood at 6-12. The start of the second half saw Will Jones step in at 10 whilst Rob Nichols pushed into the fullback position and Trevor Powell coming into the Centre in replacement of Jayson Abbott.
These few changes and a new game plan saw the Wildboys stepping it up a gear and starting to move the ball away from the contact area which started to create gaps. 10 mins in they were attacking well in Windsors 22 and a good phase of play saw Harry Hillier slide over for a well worked team try. This was converted by Will Jones - 6-19.
Another stagnant 20 minutes of rugby was then played which proved only one thing - that the referee was a big fan of the scrum. The highlight of this phase of play was when Wild Bill knocked over a well-dressed gentleman on the side of the pitch as he tried to catch a ball that was already out of play. This would soon earn him the Mare of the Match accolade. Wild Bill then tried to redeem himself by scoring the much needed bonus point try for the Wildboys which was converted by Will Jones - 6-26.
In the final plays of the game the Wildboys backs, who had been fairly quiet for most of the game, had the opportunity to pass it wide and this phase of play made Adam Draper the final tryscorer of the game. The easy conversion was shockingly missed by Will Jones so the final score stood at 6-31.
Man of the Match this week went to Wild Bill who also received Mare of the Match for the afore mentioned reasons. The Wildboys will need a better performance against next weeks opponents Witney if they want a chance to keep their unbeaten run going.
