On Saturday the 14th of November The Wildboys welcomed The Dragons Teeth aka The Centaurs aka The Red Indians aka Redingensians to Kingsey Road for a hard fought battle in the harsh elements.
The Wildboys were again at full strength, with a new addition Max Wood making his debut, rather they thought they were until Dane White turned up with no kit and the same clothes he had on the night before. He hadn't returned home and had no sleep, so for the health and safety of both teams Captain George White thought it would be wise for everyone if Dane watched from the sidelines. Then to add injury to insult, during the warm up Jayson "Squidward" Abbot broke his nose clashing with George Culbert and surprisingly for him Squidward came off worse. He also had to sit this one out, so beginning with 17 prior to kick off the Wildboys actually had to go into the game without any replacements… Wild.
Anyhow The Wild Boys kicked off. The elements played their part throughout the whole game, with the worst conditions seen so far this season. Using the wind the Dragons Teeth fly half pinned The Wildboys back for most of the first half. Chinnor were managing their lineout very well all game with Mark Wilkinson and Tom White causing havoc and stealing lots of Red Indians ball as well. With the Wildboys struggling to get out their own half this saw Jon Down try to kick for touch and gain some territory, only to see his kick fly backwards due to the strong wind. Eventually Chinnor were putting pressure on the opposition in their own 22 and creeping towards the try line only to see the ball being turned over and Redingensians scrum half try to kick for touch only for Ugly Peter Way to pluck it out the air and run it back into the 22 again, side stepping one player and handing off another he found himself one on one with their full back, at this point he ran out of moves and found himself being smothered up by the opposition…Pathetic.
The game was full of unforced handling errors which was expected with the conditions and the 1st half ended up being very scrappy with both teams having much possession in the middle of the field. 0-0 half time.
In The second half Chinnor mimicked what the Red Indians were doing 1st half and used the wind to their advantage pinning back the opposition. Chinnor spent most of the opening 15 minutes in the opposing 22 and could taste the try line it was that close. Eventually a smart bit of play saw the ball reach Captain George White on the wing, who broke the tackle and touched down, only for the Referee to award a penalty try for a high tackle on the Captain. Ugly Pete slotted the conversion. 7-0.
The Wild Boys seemed to grow in confidence from this, which saw some big hits flying in from George Hope, some were deemed a tad late I must add. Chinnor again had a scrum just outside the Dragons Teeth 22 from this they broke down the blind side, Guy Hackshaw with ball in hand had one defender to beat with George Culbert on his outside supporting his run and demanding the ball, Guy decided against the easy option and ended up falling short of the try line.
The Dragons Teeth were struggling to gain any ground and found themselves under more pressure from Chinnor, the Wildboys were aggressive and rucking well, Mark Wilkinson and Sam Ludgate seemed to be everywhere around the pitch competing for the ball. Chinnor were again pressing for the try when a Wildboy fumbled the ball on the line, giving the Centaurs a scrum. Chinnor still saw this as an attacking opportunity and powerfully turned over the scrummage, seeing scrum half Rob Nichols pick the ball up and dart over the try line for Chinnor’s 2nd try of the day. Ugly Pete must have caught hypothermia with the resulting conversion being shanked wide of the posts. 12-0.
For the remainder of the half Chinnor had most possession with Redingensians trying to force a score at times only for The Wildboys to defend their score. Full Credit to Redingensians who put up one hell of a fight and gave the Wild Boys probably their toughest game all season. It was hard to pick a man of the match with everyone having a solid game, but votes went to the influential George Hope back in his natural position for his big hitting tackles and strong carries. Unfortunately Captain George White picked up mare of the match due to his try avoidance disgrace. Next up for the The Wildboys is the much anticipated grudge match against Henley 3's at Kingsey Road on the 5th of December. Until then...keep it Wild.
