Sam Angell reports as our Wildboys triumph at home

ANOTHER home fixture and another unknown opponent for the Wildboys to start their new league campaign as they welcomed Thatcham to Kingsey Road.

It didn’t take long for the Wildboys to get into the game following some good pressure in defence, Josh Evans intercepting a loose pass to canter under the posts. Charlie Nicholls converted.

Once again, the Wildboys found themselves on the front foot with a strong carry through the midfield by George Blewitt with a nice offload to Evans, who once again had the pace to finish off a great move.

Ben Mulholland, in his last game for the Wildboys before venturing to university, decided that a bloody nose was enough for a little rest, more concerned about whether he would look ok for seeing his girlfriend later in the evening.

The Wildboys sustained constant pressure from Thatcham, but their defence was up to the test and the score remained at 12-0 when the half-time whistle blew.

A strong start to the second half saw the forwards front up and resulted in Joe Chapman finishing off some outrageous handling out wide. Truly Wild. Another conversion missed and the hosts led 17-0 .

Thatcham grew back into the second 40, yet Chinnor showed great resilience. Liam Gilbert made a break and headed towards the line in front of the home crowd, unfortunately, the short burst came to an abrupt end when lactic acid took over, causing Gilbert to be caught short, much to the crowd's amusement. It wasn’t long after that Captain (Eddie) Church stood up to confirm the bonus point for Chinnor, Gilbert, in another moment of madness thought he could slot the conversion from out wide. He couldn’t. 22-0.

Dean Collins entered the fray like a man possessed and it wasn’t long before he finished off some lovely interplay to score the Wildboys' fifth try. Fortunately, Charlie resumed kicking duties and converted to make it 29-0.

A scrappy game with brilliance in places. Another five points in a new league is a real positive for the Wildboys.

Wildboys: Smith, Chapman, Evans, Blewitt, McIntosh, Jones, Nicholls, Ludgate, Church, Crockford, L Gilbert, Inman, Alexander, Mulholland, Hope.
Reps: Collins, S Gilbert, Mountford.
