CHINNOR Wildboys delivered the goods in their top-of-the-table clash with Marlow, leaving Buckinghamshire with a bonus-point victory.
It was first versus second in Counties 1 Southern North, and the win leaves our 3rd XV as the only side in the division with a 100 per cent record.
With our Wildboys having played fewer games than Marlow, the sides are equal on 44 points, but our superior points difference means we have returned to first in the table.
We started well, putting Marlow under pressure from the kick-off and it took three minutes for our first try of the afternoon to arrive. Going through the phases off a lineout, we spread the ball wide for centre Sam Hick to dive over for an unconverted score.
The home side replied to lead 7-5, but we went on to cross twice in the final eight minutes of the half to head into the break with a 15-7 advantage.
After stealing a Marlow lineout on the 22, we calmly went through the phases and the ball was worked wide for centre Sam Angell to score. Our third try then quickly arrived and was again finished out wide as wing Monty Graham touched down.
Our Wildboys started the second half in similar fashion to the first, with impressive line speed putting the home side under pressure. George Hope’s superb jackal earned a penalty and Angell kicked to the corner as we looked to secure the four-try bonus point. We played out from the maul, leading Angel diving over for his second of the afternoon following a fine break to make it 20-7 after 44 minutes.
Marlow stayed in touch with an unconverted try, but we continued to add to our tally – this time man-of-the-match Tom Alexander scored off a catch and drive as our 13-point lead was re-established.
The home side gave themselves hope with a converted try on the hour mark which reduced our advantage to six points, however our Wildboys were not about to relinquish their lead.
Just five minutes later, prop Karl Crockford scored off another driving lineout and our unbeaten start to the season continued.
Next up is High Wycombe at home this Saturday.
