CHINNOR Wildboys extended their incredible unbeaten run to five years as they earned a hard-fought bonus-point win over Bletchley.
At a wind-swept and rain-soaked Kingsey Road, our 3rd XV triumphed 24-0 as they began 2023 with five points and remain top of Counties 1 Southern North.
Ben McIntosh (2), Harry Lowe and Joe Chapman crossed as our Wildboys sit four points above second-placed Marlow with a game in hand.
This latest win means it has now been five years since their last defeat at the hands of Bracknell 2nd on January 13, 2018. It is an astonishing 72-game run, with 70 of the matches resulting in a Wildboys victory. Everyone at the Club would like to congratulate all involved over this period and here's to many more.
Saturday's contest was played in heavy conditions and we made a great start.
Five minutes was on the clock when we took the lead, with wing Monty Graham collecting a kick out of the Bletchley 22 and running it back. The ball was spread wide and centre Andrew Prosser split the defence before finding wing McIntosh for an unconverted try.
Our dominance continued and our advantage became 12 unanswered points on 18 minutes. Following a lineout and a couple of phases through the forwards, the ball was again spread wide for McIntosh to score in the corner. Fly-half Charlie Nicholls stepped up to slot the extras from the touchline, a superb conversion in the windy conditions.
Bletchley were struggling to get out of their half and on 25 minutes it became 19-0. Prosser broke through with a fine line and found George Blewitt who fed Lowe. The full-back raced down the right-hand side and - unchallenged - dotted down under the posts. Nicholls again added the extras.
The visitors piled on the pressure for the final 15 minutes of the first period, but our Wildboys stood firm, defending phase after phase to ensure they still led by 19 points at the break.
The weather deteriorated in the second half, with heavy rain hampering both sides. However, when the biblical rain stopped, we secured the four-try bonus-point with five minutes to go as replacement wing Chapman scored in the corner following great work from the forwards.
Next up for our Wildboys is a trip to Bracknell 2nd this Saturday.
