On a cold and fiercely windy day, Chinnor eventually overcame Launceston with a very late bonus point try to win 24-12.
All the action came in the first and last thirds of the match. Chinnor took the first score from a well worked rolling maul from a penalty, David Coutts touching down. A great straight line through the midfield set up a smart handling move for Chinnor which ended with debutant James Tyas scoring. Keohane's kick on 16 minutes put the home side ahead 12-0. Lewitt, for Launceston, had a straightforward penalty kick but the wind took it nearer the corner post than the upright. Launceston came back into the match after a long period of Chinnor pressure with a try from Ryan Westren to make the half time score 12-5 to Chinnor.
The next 30 minutes saw both sides struggling to impose themselves on each other with action switching from one end of the park to the other. Blewitt, for Chinnor, made a searing 50 metre break through the centre on 50 minutes only to deliver a pass just behind the two free players waiting to score. The deadlock was broken on 70 minutes. Chinnor had a series of penalty scrums but lost the ball. Richard Friend, for Launceston, broke free but was caught and spilt the ball. Three quick passes from the rescued ball then saw Chinnor's Reuben Haile scorch down the tram lines and under the posts for Chinnor's third try. Keohane's conversion put the Oxfordshire side 19-5 ahead. Launceston were not out of it and won a series of penalties in the Chinnor 22. They took a quick tap and Jamie Salter drove over for the All Blacks second try, which, converted by Lewitt, brought the match score to 19-12 to Chinnor.
Chinnor turned up the heat in the last five minutes in search of the bonus point. They earned a series of penalty line outs. A simple throw to the unmarked Long at the front of the line out saw him trot over the line for the final try and a 24-12 victory to Chinnor.
The conditions were difficult with a fierce wind howling across the pitch making most kicks look like boomerangs. Exchange referee Luis Caviglia from Paraguay had a good game, particularly his positioning – he was always in the right place. Chinnor had a lot of dominance in terms of territory, possession and at scrum time which should have led to more points. Launceston stayed competitive throughout and scored two good tries with scrum half Friend playing well. Chinnor’s Cano did well in the front row and new boy Tyas looks most promising. Great defensive work and some surging runs earns No 8 Matthew Bolwell star player.
