After a slow start, Chinnor eventually found their rhythm to run out 45-18 winners against Bristol side, Dings Crusaders.
The first 20 minutes belonged to Dings as Chinnor scrum errors kept the game in the Chinnor half and Dings turned the pressure into points courtesy of two long-range penalty goals from the metronomic Woodrow. More Dings pressure led to a charged down kick with Dings' Chaplin touching down for their first try to give the visitors an 11-0 lead.
Chinnor finally got into the match when To'oala touched down for a Chinnor pushover try. Boughton's conversion made the score 11-7 to Dings. On 33 minutes, Keohane bashed through to put Chinnor 12-11 at the interval.
Chinnor's half time cuppa was most restorative as they exploded at the start of the second half. A minute into the half, Fatiolofa took an exquisite line and put Keohane over for Chinnor's third try. Boughton's conversion put the home side ahead 19-11. More smart work in the centre allowed Haile to drive over in the corner for the bonus try and a 24-11 lead. A pushover try in the 52nd minute from To'oala, converted by Boughton, put Chinnor further ahead 31-11. Dings kept to their task making life difficult for the Oxfordshire side but Haile skipped through the tackles to score under the posts on the 76th minute. Keohane converted to extend the lead to 38-11. Gervais, for Dings, pulled one try back on 78 minutes and Woodrow's conversion pulled the score back to 38-18. The last score went to Keohane who danced his way to the line and, converting his own try, closed out the match for a 45-18 victory to Chinnor.
The first 20 minutes for Chinnor showed match rustiness and allowed Dings to profit from home mistakes. Both sides were full of new players and so some imprecision might be expected. Dings remained competitive and tackled themselves almost to a standstill at times.
The middle 40 minutes was a different matter for Chinnor with some faster ball to the centres who knew what to do. The scrum sorted itself out with powerful scrummaging that led directly to two tries. The back row were busy with a fine debut from open side Ben Manning. Keohane’s influence grew and he ended up with a hat trick, as much to do with his determination as with his mazy running. Had the odd bounce been different, Haile would have had more than his two tries. Although there were several candidates for star player, smart work centre field throughout the match by Junior Fatialofa, earns him the plaudits.
