Eight-try Chinnor storm to impressive home victory

CHINNOR produced their best performance of the season to steamroll high-flying Rosslyn Park.

Our First XV crossed eight times in a magnificent display at Kingsey Road as they made it three successive home wins and recorded their biggest victory of the campaign.

Kieran Goss (2), Sam Yawayawa (2), Luke Carter, Jack Walsh, Mark Darlington and Nick Smith – who scored 20 points in total – all crossed on an afternoon when everything just clicked.

It was the perfect way to christen our new scoreboard, with the points rapidly racking up in a relentless display against a side we often enjoy tough, tight and entertaining affairs.

Led by Carter at scrum-half, this was definitely a one-sided affair with Chinnor outstanding, while Yawayawa starred at inside centre as he scored his first tries of the season.

The victory keeps us seventh in the National League 1 table and we will now head into our remaining three games with plenty of confidence.

Director of Rugby, Richard Thorpe made seven changes – one positional – from the side which started last week’s defeat at Taunton Titans.

Darlington, Goss, George Grose, Willie Ryan and Soane Tonga’uiha came into the XV, with Jason Worrall moving to the left wing.

Grose was among three homegrown players in the matchday squad. Andy Berry and Bradley Harewood were named among the replacements, with the latter set for his maiden home First XV appearance.

With the sun shining, the scene was set for an afternoon of attacking flowing rugby and the boys certainly delivered from the word go.

Within 12 minutes we led by 17 unassailable points and never looked back.

Our first try arrived on six minutes and was cleverly created by Jack Walsh, who was outstanding at fly-half. A lovely little dummy and offload found Ben Manning in space and the skipper sent Goss – fuelled by the packet of Haribo he worked his way through while supporting the Powerhouse boys during their 24-hour row the night before - racing down his right wing and over the try-line. Smith stepped up to add the extras and it was a fine start.

It quickly became 14-0 a couple of minutes later as Carter shot through a gap and over under the sticks after some nice hands on the 22. Smith was left with the simplest of conversions and the full-back soon slotted a 12th-minute penalty as Park looked shell-shocked.

Successive penalties gave the visitors the opportunity to get off the mark and they took it as pick and goes allowed them to make metres, before Hugo Ellis snuck through a gap and crashed over. Harry Leonard added the extras to reduce our lead to ten points.

However, Chinnor firmly put their foot on the gas and continued to deliver some of their best rugby of the campaign. We were in the try-scoring mood and were to cross three more times before the break.

Playing quickly off the lineout, Yawayawa ran a fine line and stormed through a huge gap in the centre of the park to score his first try of the season under the posts. Smith continued his perfect day from the tee to make it 24-7 after 27 minutes.

Eight minutes later and Yawayawa crossed again as we took advantage of the extra man with Park’s Dan Laventure in the sin-bin. Darlington and Fred Tuilagi carried well off a lineout and Walsh sent the powerful centre storming over the try-line. Smith again added the extras as we found ourselves 31-7 in front.

We continued to enjoy the majority of territory and possession as the half drew to a close and our fifth try arrived right on 40 minutes.

Smith brilliantly broke from half-way and sent Goss racing down the left wing, and he was brilliantly able to feed Walsh, who scampered over out wide for his first try of the season. The majority of our players were already making their way towards the tunnel as Smith steadied himself for the conversion, and the full-back superbly slotted the extras from the touchline as we headed into the break with a 38-7 lead.

It had been some sensational rugby and the home crowd were buzzing following an outstanding 40 minutes. Could we keep it going in the second half?

Absolutely. Within eight minutes we had added two further tries and 12 points to our tally as we stormed into a 50-7 lead.

A lineout on the Park 22 proved the catalyst for our first score of the second half, with Carter sniping off the back and through another gaping hole. The scrum-half broke forward and fed Gossy, who found his way over for his 12th try of the season, overtaking James Bourton as our First XV’s top try-scorer. Smith again stepped up to add the extras.

We were certainly in the mood, and five minutes later Darlington marked another fine performance at hooker with a try as he plunged over at the back of a powerful driving lineout. Smith was unable to maintain his perfect day with the boot, but it did not matter as we now led by 43 points.

The boys were in the mood for more and another try so nearly followed. Keston Lines, again impressive at loosehead prop, broke the gain line and showed fine hands to send Carter charging forward. That move broke down and did result in both sides losing a player to the sin-bin, but try number eight was not far away.

It arrived just after the hour mark as our pressure took its toll. Park had been sucked in to the centre of the pitch and Walsh spotted the space out wide, sending a lovely miss-pass out to Smith who crossed to make it 55-7.

We continued to create chances, with Berry stopped just short following a great break from Goss and Worrall, while Bourton was so close to latching on to his own grubber.

However, it was Park who were to finish the scoring with Henry Spencer showing his strength to go over under the posts, before Charlie Piper plunged across at the back of a driving maul.

At the end of the day, though, the damage had already been well and truly done.

This report has reflected a lot on the flair on show, but our defence and set-piece was also on song, typified by the late scrum penalties won by Harewood and Lines.

It was easily our best performance of the season and one which had been bubbling under the surface for months. Here’s to the remaining three games!
