Chinnor come up just short at Southend

John Vaughan24 Mar 2014 - 13:49

Another agonisingly close loss

Chinnor, after a strong first half, faded early in the second half and despite a late rally, narrowly lost to Southend 27-25.

Chinnor started brightly and Millett scored their first try in the 12th minute and, converting it, gave Chinnor a 7-0 lead. Burr, with a penalty goal for Southend, brought the score to 7-3. With most of play in the Southend half, Chinnor capitalised on their dominance with penalty goals in the 24th and 33rd minutes from Millett to go in 13-3 ahead at half-time, seemingly well in control of the game.

But things turned around at half-time with Chinnor starting to make mistakes at critical times as the pressure from the home side increased. With Southend's scrum starting to cause Chinnor problems, Branch nipped in for Southend’s first try on the 49th minute, Burr converting, to reduce Chinnor’s lead to 13-10. More pressure from Southend saw Cleare go clear through a hole in the visitors defence to put Southend ahead for the first time in the match.Burr’s conversion increased Southend's lead to 17-13 on the 57th minute. Chinnor’s Frank Jones was then yellow carded for inappropriate language, allowing Burr to slot a penalty goal to increase the home side lead to 20-13.

A neat passage of play saw Southend's Billings cut back through the defence to score under the posts. Burr’s conversion on the 67th minute gave the home side a 27-13 lead and the game seemed to be slipping away from Chinnor. However, something rallied Chinnor and they upped their tempo and, in the 69th minute, Goode bustled his way over the line but was penalised for a double movement. This setback further stimulated Chinnor and Hayes went over in the 71st minute for a converted try to make the match score 27-20. Chinnor continued to press and Goode dotted down in the 79th minute for Chinnor’s third try of the match to make the score 27-25. Millett, from the touchline, attempted to square the match with the last kick of the match but the ball sailed narrowly wide to make Southend the victors 27-25.
