Chinnor's flying finish too Goode for Redruth

Dave Winpenny11 Mar 2014 - 17:38

Chinnor stunned Redruth with two converted tries in the last eight minutes to win 26-25 in Cornwall.

In stark contrast to the previous week, when they lost 21-20 at home to Shelford with a try from the final play, this time it was Chinnor’s turn to sneak victory.

Trailing 25-12, the visitors gave themselves hope with a try from centre Matt Goode, converted by fly half Will Millett.

And then player-coach Goode came up trumps again on 79 minutes, leaving Millett to win the match with his kick.

Chinnor began brightly, with hooker Jamie Townsend crossing near the posts on seven minutes and Millett converting.

Fly half Brett Rule, for Redruth, and Millett both missed penalty attempts before Rule added the extras to lock Damien Cook’s try on 23 minutes.

Redruth grabbed the lead when flanker Ben Priddey finished off a move involving Rule and wing Rhodri McAtee.

Rule’s penalty made it 15-7 at half-time.

Chinnor struck back almost immediately, scoring their second try through wing George Blewitt.

Visiting lock and player coach Andrew Smith was sin-binned as Redruth piled on the pressure, with Cook powering over for his second try.

Priddey had his own second score chalked off by referee Phil Watters, who ruled that he had lost the ball.

It did not seem to matter as Redruth secured a bonus point with a fourth try, scored by McAtee.

Replacement Ashley Hosking’s conversion hit the crossbar, which ultimately proved the difference.

Goode, who had been the villain with three yellow cards in his last three matches, became Chinnor’s hero and Millett’s final conversion left the home crowd in shock.
