Thrilling first home match of the season

Corpe bags 4 as Chinnor put 7 past Dings Crusaders

Chinnor, for the first home match of the season, gave debuts to Andrew Tibbatts, Nathaniel Titchard-Jones and a return to the side after university by Ben Farr.

The match started well for Chinnor when Dings fumbled the kick-off and Chinnor's driving maul led to a successful penalty kick in front of the posts by Millett. Chinnor's score was increased to 8-0 when Sam Blewitt sped on to a pass in the tramlines, threw an outrageous dummy and gambolled to the line. Millett added the extras for a 10-0 lead on the 11th minute. Six minutes later Jones dummied his way through the defence line and slipped an exquisite inside pass to the supporting Corpe who sped to the line for Chinnor’s second try of the day. Millet again did the honours to increase Chinnor's lead to 17-0.

Chinnor, after a useful driving maul, sent the ball wide and Millet, grasping the ball from behind his back sliced through the defence for a try to put Chinnor 22-0 ahead - a lead they held until half time.

The first points of the second half went to Dings Crusaders from a penalty goal by Woodrow. The injured Millett had been replaced at half-time by Cathcart who, with a glorious long pass in the 45th minute, found Mountford out wide who drew the defence to put Corpe away for his second try of the day to give Chinnor a lead of 27-3. Corpe was back five minutes later for another try - this time courtesy of Goode whose mazy run setup a straight run in for Corpe.

With Chinnor now ahead 32-3, Dings began to come back into the match and a sweeping move saw Dempsey go over in the 66th minute for the visitors’ first try of the day. Woodrow's conversion reduced the deficit to 32-10. Minutes later, Fielding for Chinnor, sliced through the middle of the defence and put through a grubber kick for George Blewett, on for the injured Goode, to touch down his first and Chinnor's sixth try of the match. Now 42-10 ahead, the Crusaders looked well out of the match but Dings would not lie down and Sam Cox went over for a try in the 81st minute which was converted by Woodrow to give a final match score of 42-17 to the Oxfordshire boys.

Dings had trouble in getting any good quality ball, especially in the first half but improved matters in the second half to score their two tries. They had a number of good line breaks and might have scored more had the Chinnor defence being less speedy in hauling down anything threatening their try line.

Chinnor’s all-round team performance was excellent. The back row, with Tibbatts direct and pugnacious, Hastings’ amazing work rate and Gilbert picking up any loose pieces were the core of this success. A new look front row bedded down well and Tichard-Jones was prominent in the loose. Millett gave the backs plenty of go forward ball and Jones’ kicking was intelligent. Corpe was the beneficiary of smart work by his colleagues for two of his tries but his scorching pace made the other two all his own and made him man of the match.
