Chinnor made hard work of their 32-13 victory against Chippenham.
Chinnor chose to rest a few of their seasoned campaigners and so brought in Ian Stock at loose head, Macsen Williams at open side and debutant Christopher Elder on the left wing.
Chinnor's early pressure bore fruit in the 10th minute when a sweeping backs move allowed Richie Williams to dot down for the first try of the match. Chippenham brought the score to 5-3 when full-back Dave Slee successfully converted a penalty goal after a Chinnor indiscretion at the ruck. On the 20th minute, after a catch and drive from a penalty, skipper Hutchings scored Chinnor's second try. Chippenham continued to compete and, although second best at scrum time, managed to frustrate Chinnor's attacking ambitions. On several occasions, Chippenham managed to pierce Chinnor's midfield and only desperate tackling prevented a score to the opposition. On the 30th minute, Chinnor scored again. This time Sam Stoop finished off a period of sustained Chinnor pressure with a try, converted by Cathcart to make the half-time score 15-3 in favour of Chinnor.
Two minutes into the second half, Cathcart stepped forward to kick a penalty goal. Some weak defending allowed Chippenham’s Karl Brandt an unconverted try on the 49th minute to make the school 18-8. In the 64th minute, Chinnor brought on Liam Gilbert and Jack Green. Gilbert's first touch of the ball at a lineout led to a driven score with Macsen Williams carrying over the line. Cathcart's conversion made the score a healthier 25-8.
Chinnor continued to apply pressure which was rewarded in the 72nd minute when Richie Williams scored his second try wide out after a long series of penalties in Chippenham's 22. Cathcart's conversion brought the score to 32-8 but Chippenham, who refused to lie down throughout, scored the last try of the match from a quickly taken tap penalty, Darren McMillan scoring.
This was a match in which Chinnor were good in parts. The pack, and front row in particular, had a good day at the office. Stock, Cawston and Whelan scrummed well, tackled furiously and ran the ball in the loose at will. However, the intensity and quality of execution waxed and waned throughout the match. Chippenham were obdurate and competitive throughout and did much to frustrate Chinnor's game plan. The number of penalties against Chinnor at the breakdown will be of concern to their coaching staff.
