On a bright, sunny but bitter day, Chinnor were pleased to pick up a bonus point win at home against league strugglers Maidenhead by 43-14.
Chinnor began the game with great fervour and had scored their bonus point 4th try within 17 minutes of the start. The first half was all one-way traffic for Chinnor as both their backs and forwards outplayed their opposition. However, the second half was a much more muted affair for Chinnor who appeared to go into their shell and allow Maidenhead back into the game, who outscored Chinnor, in the second half, by 14 points to 9. A number of ugly off the ball incidents may have had some destabilising effect on the Chinnor effort.
Chinnor's first try from captain Hutchings was scored in the third minute. Just four minutes later, inside centre Sam Stoop, in impressive form throughout, added a second try which he converted himself. A minute later, Ben Farr scored Chinnor's third try finishing off a sweeping backs move. Stoop again converted to give Chinnor a 19-0 lead. On the 17th minute, scrum-half Prescott added Chinnor's fourth to go 24 nil up. Farr was forced to leave the field with an eye injury following an off the ball incident. Cathcart replaced him and strolled in, on the 34th minute for Chinnor's fifth try and, with half-time beckoning, Chinnor's number eight Tom Mowbray added the fifth, converted by Cathcart to give a half-time score of Chinnor 34 Maidenhead 0.
The first score of the second half went to Maidenhead when a sustained attack allowed fly half Keohane to dot down. With the conversion from the same player, Maidenhead were now on the score board. Bad feelings began to build in the game and it was not long before referee Simon Lane produced a yellow card for Chinnor's Chase and Maidenhead's Stefan for fighting. Chinnor went to 13 men when Cathcart was yellow carded for infringing as Maidenhead peppered the Chinnor line. Chinnor resisted stoutly to deny Maidenhead a score despite considerable pressure.
On the 57th minute Wallace fielded badly kicked ball from Maidenhead and strolled over for Chinnor's seventh try which Cathcart duly converted. Maidenhead, to their credit, continued to fight for every ball and continued to pressurise Chinnor. This pressure eventually paid off in the 73rd minute when Keohane again scored and converted for Maidenhead, leaving the final score 43-14 in Chinnor’s favour.
The first half-hour of the match saw scintillating play from the combined Chinnor team, Stoop, Gilbert and Jones particularly to the fore. However, after this early dominance, Chinnor took their foot off the gas and Maidenhead became increasingly more competitive. Chinnor failed to score on at least three further occasions and must learn to be more clinical when clear-cut opportunities present themselves. Maidenhead, although clearly outplayed in the first half hour, are to be commended for remaining competitive, on occasions perhaps too competitive, throughout.
Chinnor now face a difficult set of fixtures, playing the two teams above them and the one below them in the league.
