On a dank and sporadically rainy day, Chinnor overcame Barnstaple 43-15 scoring 6 tries in the process.
The first quarter of the match favoured Barnstaple They opened the scoring with a try from scrum half Ben Roost who seeing a pass to both sides of the ruck risky, hopped through the centre of the ruck and under the posts. Wearne converted to give Barum an early 7-0 lead.
Chinnor then decided to up their game and a flowing move was well finished by Farr in the corner in the 25th minute. Cathcart converted to level the scores at 7-7. Pickett had to leave the field with a rib injury and was replaced by evergreen Simon Matthews. A few minutes later, a rapid attack was halted short of the Barnstaple line. Quick ball saw Williams take the perfect line to score under the posts with Cathcart converting. On the 35th minute, Prescott barrelled over after good approach work by the Chinnor pack. With Cathcart’s conversion, Chinnor now led 21-7, a score they held until half time.
After the break, Chinnor continued to up the pace but Barnstaple scored first, courtesy of a Wearne penalty goal. Chinnor replied with a Cathcart penalty goal. With Barnstaple having two men (Fatilofa and Sumner) in the bin, Chinnor’s backs began to set the pitch alight with their pace. Three tries were scored in quick succession - all by Ben Farr – after quick and accurate handling from the Chinnor backs. Two were converted, one by Cathcart’s replacement kicker James Hewitt. With a final score of 43-15, Chinnor were happy to grab maximum points with a great display of running rugby in difficult conditions.
The Chinnor pack were aggressive in both attack and defence, providing good ball for the backs who were in scintillating form. Brown ran excellent lines and passed well; Williams was creative in the quality and timing of his distribution to lay on tries for the quicksilver Ben Farr on the wing. Alex Wallace returned every ball with interest and pace and Cathcart’s kicking was nearly faultless. Maintaining this kind of form will push Chinnor further up the table from their current fourth place.
