Chinnor didn't close down a game which they had under their control at the half way point and let Southend add to their run of victories as the season comes to a close.
Rob Kirby from Southend scored 21 points in the victory which should assure them of National Division 2 rugby next season. However, the match winning try came from Harry Hudson after 74 minutes.
Chinnor started very brightly with their first try coming from a dynamic break and Sam Stoop touching down for a converted try on 11 mins. A further 11 minutes passed when Tom Gray who was excellent all day, scampered over for the second try again converted by Sam Angell. This gave Chinnor a 21 - 6 lead after only 27 minutes and the Chinnor fans were smiling in the sun.
But this is when Kirby started to make the big difference; he had already scored with 2 penalty goals but in the 29th minute he cross the whitewash for Southend's first try which he converted; of course! He added another penalty and when the half time whistle came it was 21 - 19 in Chinnor's favour.
At the start of the second half Chinnor continued in the way they had in the first with Liam Gilbert crossing for a try after 47 minutes again converted by Sam Angell; things were looking good for Chinnor.
But Kirby had a different view of how things should end up. A penalty and then a great try from Dan Cleare on the hour made the score 28 - 26 with a quarter to go.
Chinnor won a penalty try as Liam Gilbert was obstructed within feet of the try line. Again this try was converted by the reliable Angell and Chinnor we again back in front by 9 points. But two tries from Southend within 6 minutes put them into the lead by 1 point; a lead that despite Chinnor throwing everything at Southend they were not able to overcome.
A great game of rugby with the final result unclear until the final whistle blew. Chinnor will be disappointed to have lost control of this game in the final quarter, but please to see 4 tries and a losing bonus points.
