Chinnor score six tries to triumph in Yorkshire

CHINNOR delivered another superb performance to claim a bonus-point victory and extend their unbeaten run on the road to six games.

The Thame-based side scored six tries – five of which came in the first half – at a blustery Clifton Lane to leave south Yorkshire with five points.

Jason Worrall (2), Nick Selway, Kieran Goss and Matt Marley crossed for Chinnor, with the first score of the day being a penalty try.

The visitors were impressive with the wind to their backs in the first half, controlling the conditions excellently to lead 35-5 at the break.

Another brilliant victory has helped Chinnor further close the gap to the teams above them in National League 1. Just three points is now the difference to third place, which is now occupied by Rams who lost to Blackheath, while Rosslyn Park are only a further point in front.

Director of rugby Matt Williams made two changes, one positional, from the win over Cinderford last weekend.

Kieran Goss retuned to the starting line-up on the right wing, with skipper Worrall moving to inside centre.

Chinnor were dominant from the first whistle, with Rotherham unable to get out of their own half for a good 25 minutes, during which time the visitors opened up a 21-point lead.

It seemed only a matter of time before the Oxfordshire side would open the scoring, while Rotherham were regularly penalised.

Suddenly full-back Tom Benjamin and lock Dan Preston-Routledge were sin-binned within two minutes of each other and Chinnor took the lead after a quarter of an hour from a penalty try following a five-metre scrum.

The Oxfordshire club kept their foot down and doubled their lead almost immediately. Winger Josh Hodson exploited space down the left and found scrum-half Ed Hoadley who sent Worrall diving over. Fly-half Laurence May converted into the wind to make it 14-0.

Rotherham looked stunned and they continued to be penalised, this time allowing May to kick to the corner. Chinnor’s catch and drive proved unstoppable and Selway peeled off the back to score. May added the extras to extend their lead to 21 unanswered points.

The visitors were relentless, dominating in all areas of the pitch and it became 28-0 on 29 minutes. Flanker James Tyas rampaged down the left and full-back Will Harries looked certain to score, but he was forced to run parallel to the try-line as Titans got back to defend. The former Wales international kept his composure and spread wide for Goss to cross in the corner. May continued his impressive day with the boot to convert from out wide.

Rotherham got on the scoreboard immediately after when Benjamin crossed for an unconverted try, but Chinnor finished the half on top and scored a contender for try of the season on 36 minutes.

Having won the ball back on their own five-metre line, many would have expected May to kick clear but he opted to play out. Harries received the ball and he found a gap to dart through and galloped to half-way where he fed the supporting Worrall, who outpaced the opposition to race over from 30 metres. Again, May was flawless from the tee to add the extras.

There was still time for Rotherham to have their third yellow card of the first half with Kieran Frost sin-binned just before the break.

With the wind to their backs in the second half, Titans delivered a much-improved performance, but they had a mountain to climb.

They had an early opportunity when they kicked to the corner on 44 minutes, but Joe Dancer brilliantly stole the lineout. You could be forgiven for thinking that it was not going to be their day, but they went on to score twice in the space of three minutes.

Scrum-half Connor Dever snuck through a gap, Sam Hollingsworth adding the extras, on 58 minutes before winger Ben Robbins dived over for an unconverted try to cut Chinnor’s lead to 18 points.

The visitors had defended well to restrict the hosts to just those two tries, while they had kept the ball confidently inside their own half.

Chinnor had enjoyed very little territory since the restart, but took their opportunity on 67 minutes. Selway looked certain to go over from another driving lineout and when stopped short, Marley took over to force his way over and score his first try for the club. May made it five conversions from five with another fine conversion.

The visitors could have added to their tally and Sam Yawayawa looked certain to score but knocked on after breaking a tackle.

That was Chinnor’s last opportunity as the game looked to be petering out, however Titans finished the game by securing their four-try bonus point through Benjamin, Hollingsworth converting.

All in all, though, it was another positive afternoon for the Oxfordshire side.
