John Vaughan writes ...
Chinnor snatched two thoroughly deserved points in a pulsating finish at Lydney. Trailing by five points heading into injury time Chinnor launched a thrilling attack from deep inside their own half. Strong carries from inspirational skipper Matt Hutchings and Darren Oxley released Trevor Powell on a barnstorming run, the Irishman beat five defenders courtesy of an array of jackhammer handoffs. Chinnor recycled the ball deep into Lydney's 22 and finally Alex Wallace showed an eye for a gap and twinkling toes to dance over for a rapturously received try. Rich William's valiant conversion attempt fell agonisingly short.
Chinnor had begun the game at high tempo and a quick tap penalty and run from Chesney Ellis caught the Lydney defence napping as he fed Trevor Powell who showed pace and anticipation to score under the posts. Chinnor then silenced the home crowd when another multi-faceted play saw Ellis this time release Richie Williams for a run to the corner. 12-3.
Chinnor knew they had to be on guard to prevent Lydney star player Mark Davies any sniff at goal. However, Lydney got back into the game with Davies's unerring boot bringing the score to 12-9 very close to the break. Chinnor then paid for a lapse in concentration with the last play of the half, Davies released Williams to score in the corner and hand Lydney a hardly-deserved 14-12 lead.
As the temperature in The Forest of Dean plunged below freezing, the action on the pitch rose to boiling point as the tense matched built towards its ultimate thrilling denouement. Williams banged over a long range penalty after strong bursts from Hutchins and Hastings. But Lydney came back again through that man Davies, a superb 48 metre drop goal was followed by a highly controversial penalty. Chinnor had shown immense spirit and tenacity in defending and ultimately turning over a series of Lydney attacks. From the resulting scrum, Chinnor had won the ball and were ready to clear when Gloucester referee penalised them. Davies did the inevitable. 20-15. A word here for Chinnor's front row, which featured 18 year olds Ellis and Baker and the seasoned 20 year old Ian Stock. All three had huge games, along with subs Tom Whelan and Paddy Stennings.
It was at this point that Chinnor showed unquenchable spirit, desire and no little skill with their thrilling finish which was saluted by the large travelling support.
