This top of the table clash went firmly in favour of the home side with Chinnor out scoring Old Elthamians 6 tries to 3 in a stirring 40-22 victory.
Old Elthamians were first to score when James Golledge touched down with the game hardly started and the home side down to 14 with player/coach Richard Thorpe down injured at the other end. Chinnor came straight back when Junior Fatialofa picked a hole in the defence after a series of punishing drives in Old E's 22. A similarly engineered score came from good work by Nathan Hannay linking with CJ Osazuwa who went over soon after to put Chinnor ahead 12-7. Chinnor's pack then began to dominate and a series of penalty scrums led to a penalty try to the Oxfordshire boys when referee Mr Holsgrove lost patience with the visiting pack. With Chinnor scrum half Greg Goodfellow in the sin bin, Old Elthamians took full advantage when Jay Rudland-Thomas dotted down after a series of pick and drives. More gritty work from the Chinnor pack saw Nathan Hannay cross the whitewash for the bonus point try and a half time lead of 26-12.
Tom White, for Old E's, opened the second half scoring with a penalty goal. Chinnor battered the Old Elthamian line for an age before the unmarked Danny Barnes went over out wide after a prodigiously long pass from Greg Goodfellow. The visitors came back with an impressive, against the grain, line from try scorer James Golledge. White's conversion closed the gap to 33-22. Chinnor kept up the pressure in the Old Elthamian 22 and things eventually gave as Bevon Armitage crossed wide out. Bertie Hopkin's conversion finished the day's scoring for a 40-22 victory.
The match delivered what was expected: two good, previously undefeated teams playing at pace in front of a very large crowd. Old Elthamians have good, pacey backs who looked threatening. Ollie Claxton at scrum half was always prompting and urging his backs and the wide threat of Dominic Lespierre was always apparent. In the backs, Chinnor looked organised with much hustle and bustle on defence and great pace on attack. Kieran Goss's thumping tackle in the last play of the match spectacularly prevented a bonus point try to the visitors. Whilst the backs were, mostly, evenly matched, it was in the pack that Chinnor clearly had the edge. High energy from the back row, strength from the second row and power from the front row put Chinnor on the front foot in most exchanges. The scrum was particularly profitable for Chinnor and Jay Tyack, for the front row union, gets this week's laurels.
