For this round of the Oxfordshire Cup, Chinnor coach Jason Bowers elected to put out the Chinnor Second XV against Oxford Brookes University. There was an added twist to the match in that Oxford Brookes was captained by Chinnor's very own leading try scorer, Liam Gilbert.
In the grisly, grey conditions, the students were first to score with a well-struck penalty goal. For the next 20 minutes, the students, full of vim and vigour, looked most threatening and kept Chinnor pinned in their own half. On the 19th minute, after a series of punishing penalty scrums to Chinnor, the referee decided that the continual infringement be brought to an end by awarding a penalty try to Chinnor. 18-year-old Chinnor fly half Will Millet added the extras to give Chinnor a 7-3 lead. On the 24th minute, Oxford Brookes reduced the deficit to 7-6 with a penalty goal for hands in the ruck. Straight from the restart, Brookes were penalised and Millet increased the Chinnor lead to 10-6 with a penalty goal.
On the 38th minute, Chinnor were awarded their second penalty try as the students’ scrum continually collapsed under the superior Chinnor pack. Millet added the extras for a 17-6 Chinnor lead at half time
On the 53rd minute, the students lost the ball on the Chinnor 22. Chinnor’s Gray picked up and motored under the posts for Chinnor’s third try. Millet’s improvement increased the home lead to 24-6. 10 minutes later, Millet sliced through the blind side to slip in Guy Hackshaw for a try and a score of 29-6. Oxford Brookes continued to battle but were held by a purposeful and committed Chinnor defence. Ludgate expertly chipped the ball in the 67th minute for the fleet footed Gray who glided to the posts for Chinnor’s fifth try.
The 70th minute saw the highlight of the match. With the ball about to be carried over into touch, Hopwood flicked the ball inside to Gray who with one continuous motion slipped the ball to the supporting Powell who set off for the line. With the chasers closing, Powell superbly delayed his backward overhead pass to Ludgate who skipped to the line for the last score of the evening to leave Chinnor 39-6 victors.
