Walking Rugby at Chinnor RFC – The Perfect Way to Stay in the Game

Francesca Ronan27 Feb - 12:00

Dust off the boots, try something new, or ease back in—Walking Rugby is the perfect Friday night mix of sport and social!

Whether you’re dusting off the boots, returning from injury, or trying the sport for the first time, Walking Rugby is the perfect way to stay active, have fun, and be part of the rugby community.

At Chinnor RFC, we run Walking Rugby every Friday night, alongside our Touch Rugby sessions, and of course, the bar is open afterwards—because rugby isn’t just about playing, it’s about the social side too!

What is Walking Rugby?
Walking Rugby is a low-impact, non-contact version of the game, making it accessible to all ages, abilities, and fitness levels. It retains the core principles of rugby—passing, movement, teamwork, and try-scoring—but without the high-speed collisions. It’s competitive but inclusive, giving everyone a chance to get involved, no matter their experience.

Richard, who recently moved to the area, found Walking Rugby to be the perfect way to connect with like-minded people. “Being new to the area, I was looking for somewhere to meet like-minded people. Walking Rugby provided the perfect opportunity to do that. It’s fun being able to pass a rugby ball around, dodge tackles, and score tries. On top of that, it’s great exercise—raising the heart rate and getting the body moving while not being too tough. Afterwards, it’s always nice to grab a drink and chat with your fellow walkers.”

Why Give It a Go?

  • Stay Active: A great way to exercise without the strain of full-contact rugby.

  • Meet New People: Whether you’re new to the area or just looking to expand your social circle, Walking Rugby is a fantastic way to connect with like-minded people.

  • Perfect for All Abilities: Whether you're a seasoned player, returning from injury, or completely new to the game, everyone is welcome.

  • Great Fun: Expect plenty of laughs, outrageous skills on display, and a brilliant atmosphere both on and off the pitch.

For Sue, returning to rugby through Walking Rugby has been a life-changing experience. “Getting back into rugby has had such a positive effect on me. Life and time kept me away from full contact, but Walking Rugby has given me a new lease on FUN, FRIENDS, and FITNESS. From the moment I walked into the clubhouse and was met by my friend and her teammates, I felt a warmth, a friendship, and a belonging.”

A Sport for Everyone
Walking Rugby truly is for all ages. Sean, at 67 ¾, loves the welcoming and social atmosphere it brings. “I love Walking Rugby at Chinnor for being a really welcoming social group as well as an opportunity for a bit of exercise. The emphasis is on having fun, whether you’re a former player or someone who’s never touched a rugby ball.”

And if you’re recovering from injury? Walking Rugby is a fantastic way to ease back into the sport, as Fran discovered. “With a 12-month recovery from an ankle injury, I thought it would be a long time before I could get back on the field. But Walking Rugby gave me the perfect opportunity to return much sooner, allowing me to throw a ball around, enjoy the game, and have a proper good laugh! The people are amazing, and the skills on display are nothing short of outrageous! Would recommend!”

Come and Try It!
Walking Rugby at Chinnor RFC is completely free, and we welcome anyone who wants to give it a go. Just turn up in trainers or boots and get involved. Whether you’re looking to stay fit, meet new people, or just have a bit of fun on a Friday night, this is the perfect way to do it.
