MATCH REPORT – CALDY 35–38 CHINNOR
Elior Champ Rugby, Round 3 – Saturday 3 October, 1pm
In bright sunshine at Paton Field, Caldy and Chinnor produced an extraordinary contest that swung from one‑sided to breathless in the space of 80 remarkable minutes. Chinnor emerged 38–35 winners, but only after surviving a furious Caldy comeback that almost rewrote the script entirely.
The opening half belonged emphatically to the visitors. Caldy handed Chinnor early momentum with an over‑hit kick‑off, and from there the Ravers endured a punishing spell of pressure. A 9–3 penalty count and two yellow cards left the home side trapped in defensive mode, their set piece creaking under the weight of Chinnor’s juggernaut pack.
Chris Moore opened the scoring on five minutes, driven over from a penalty lineout, with Liam Richman converting. Caldy briefly broke free of the onslaught, stringing together 20 phases to send Will Robinson over in the corner, superbly converted by Ollie Davies. But it was a rare moment of respite. Chinnor’s dominance produced further tries for Callum Pascoe, Jack Metcalf and Ben Currie, all forged through relentless forward pressure. At 7–24, Caldy were reeling.
Within a minute of the restart, Metcalf’s second try stretched the lead to 31–7, and the match looked gone. Then everything changed.
Caldy’s bench injected energy, accuracy and belief. Suddenly it was Chinnor on the back foot as the Ravers pressure squeezed some errors from a previously faultless visiting team. Connor Wilkinson and Matt Gallagher crossed and Davies added two more.
The final minutes were electric. A long range Davies touch‑finder drifted long, line-out misses, scrum resets and heroic defence from both sides. The comeback was exciting, but Chinnor held on for two wins back to back on the road and maintain 5th in the league.
