Roger Harman
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we inform you of the death of Friday Club stalwart, Roger Harman, aged 81, who passed away on Saturday 22nd February, having failed to recover from a stroke.
Roger was a keen golfer and was captain of the Whiteleaf Club and later Chair of the Golf Committee at the Oxfordshire. His golf tours took him all over the world.
Once Roger had retired from Kodak he, along with ex President John Ashfield and a mutual friend, went on holiday to Barbados and on their return John suggested that Roger could spend some of his free time helping out with the Friday Club.
Some 12 years ago he duly joined the retired 'boys' and willingly turned his hands to a variety of tasks from emptying litter bins to measuring out pitches for the Mini Festivals. He also became an ardent supporter of the 1st XV following them from Darlington to Penzance, rarely missing a Home or Away game.
He also enjoyed the Friday Club's Belgium Trips and Essex Sailing Barge trips. We can still see Roger chasing unsuccessfully after an Ostend tram late at night as he had left his 'man bag' on the seat. A quick thinking cab driver soon came to the rescue with a hot pursuit of the tram to get his passport and Euros back.
Roger was a dapper dresser and a true gentleman who never wanted to be late to anything. He was always polite, courteous and generous – especially to the ladies, and enjoyed good company, theatre trips, fine food and tasteful wine.
Our thoughts now go to his family at this very sad time.
(Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course)
Goodnight 'Chardonnay', sleep well my friend!!
